Why Texas is the choice in Red RiverOct 6, 2025 Updated 14 hrs ago 0Berry TramelTulsa World Sports ColumnistMost everyone involved in OU-Texas has their Dallas traditions.
Early-morning turkey leg. Dinner on Friday night at a favorite restaurant and/or with your favorite people. Secret parking spaces and traffic workarounds.
Here’s my tradition: I pick a winner based on who won the year before. The Red River history shows a series of streaks. The Sooners and Longhorns have spent a century dominating for long stretches.
Texas won eight straight from 1940-47, OU nine of 10 from 1948-57, Texas 12 of 13 from 1958-70, OU five straight from 1971-75, Texas five of seven from 1977-83, OU four straight from 1985-88, Texas 8½ of 11 (counting a tie) from 1989-99), OU five straight from 2000-04, Texas four of five from 2005-09, OU 10 of 13 from 2010-22.
My dime-store analysis of such results is that Red River is a no-excuses rivalry. Neutral field, so teams aren’t expected to win or lose based on homefield (dis)advantage. Winners are flooded with more confidence than in more-traditional rivalries. Losers are saddled with more doubt than in other series.
But two developments are prevalent. Player turnover is so much greater, even on stable rosters like OU’s and Texas’, past results don’t carry nearly as much weight. And we’re starting to see a bunch of one-game winning streaks end in Dallas.
From 2012-16, winners were OU, Texas, OU, Texas, OU. Fast forward to 2021. It’s been OU, Texas, OU, Texas and 2025. A Sooner victory would give us a second ABABA rotation in a decade, after never having happened before in the ancient rivalry.
So I don’t know. Let’s get to the predictions:
Oklahoma versus Texas in Dallas: Longhorns 17-16. I’ll stick with my traditional one last year. It comes down to this for me. If John Mateer plays, I like the Sooners. If Michael Hawkins quarterbacks OU, I’ll take the Longhorns. Hawkins just didn’t look good at all against Kent State. And I’m guessing Mateer doesn’t play. . . .

I think that the defenses will dominate. One big offensive play, or a defensive score, or a big special-teams play will likely decide the game. BOOMER!
