Week 8
« on: October 19, 2021, 12:22:00 PM »
TT (-1) vs KSU.  Betting line is close.  I'll take TT in this one.
#3 OU (-38) vs KU.  I'll take OU :34:.  I expect to see a lot of Rattler in this one.

ISU (-4.5) vs #8 OSU.  Interesting.  Oddsmakers are not that impressed with 6-0 #8 OSU.  I think a little more highly of them.  I'll take OSU SU.  Major implications for the CCG in this one.

TCU vs WVU.  I didn't see a line on this one.  Sooners have beaten both.  I'll take TCU at home.

Bye week for UT & Baylor.

K-State at TTU: Home team wins.
OU at Kansas: OU, but I doubt if the Sooners cover the 38-point spread.
FoSu at ISU: Home team wins.  If the Pokes win, I think they'll go into Bedlam unbeaten.
WVU at TCU: Home team wins.

It is kinda hard to give 38 points

This is what killed the Big 12. All those games seem mind numbingly dull.

Meh.

Any combination of games including Ole Miss, Miss State, Kentucky, Arkansas, Vanderbilt, South Carolina, or Tennessee, also seem mind-numbingly dull.  I'm only interested in Texas A&M because my wife went there.  Really, anything in the SEC other than Alabama or Georgia, looks pretty dull to me.

I'm glad Texas is moving to the SEC for the chance to play old rivals, and maybe get in some games against the powers in Alabama and Georgia.  I'm most certainly NOT excited about playing Ole Miss or Miss State.  Like, ever.

Meh. You’re just trading boring games vs Kansas and Iowa State for the same thing with Ol Miss and South Carolina.

Every game every week can’t be a marquee one. There will be plenty of quality games and plenty of boring games.

I enjoyed our time in the Big 12 but culturally, for A&M, we’re a much better fit in the SEC.

The SEC games this week are boring as well.  LSU at Ole Miss might be the most "interesting" just to see if LSU is "back" at all (I doubt it).

Tenn plays AT Bama in a "name your score" game.  USCe at A&M?  Meh.

The SEC is going to have four former Big 12/8/SWC teams interestingly.

Well yes, that's my point.  I don't see anything in the SEC that's particularly more interesting than the B12.  It'll be a good move for Texas for many reasons, but playing the Kentuckys  and Miss States ain't one of them.

And I absolutely agree with A&M being a good cultural fit with the SEC.  That has both positive, and negative, connotations.

UK has been pretty salty of late in football, some good coaching up there I think.  Vandy this year is as bad as I recall their being, ever.  I thought Mizzou might be half decent this year, but ....  South Carolina is a dumpster fire unlikely to change much and Tenn despite their "history" is, well, not much better than USCe apparently.

Arky is on the up despite recent Ls, but won't be in Bama land.  Ole Miss and MSU are interesting at least.  We all know the SEC patina gets spread around the league to teams that frankly are not interesting.

Right.  Again, this is my point.

You say UK is pretty good, and arkanpig is on the rise.  Similarly, Iowa State is pretty good, and Oklahoma State is undefeated.  But they're not name brands, nor do they enjoy the SEC halo, so nobody gets overly excited to see them.

Playing fun, competitive football, has never been the B12's problem.  It has had it in spades.

Marketing has long been one of the major problems for the conference.

And specifically for Texas, the past decade of losing to teams like Baylor, ISU, oSu, KSU, TCU, WVU, has done severe damage to the perception of the program, despite the fact that in many years those teams have been good-to-very good.

If Texas had been losing SEC games to similarly good but not great teams, the perception of the losses and the program, wouldn't be as bad.  This phenomenon is one of the key reasons Texas ended up making the move.  The "SEC patina" will be positive for the program, even if it's not winning a lot of football games.

I mean, look what it did for the woeful ags in recent years.  Their conference win% is almost identical in the SEC, to what it was in the B12.  But the perception of all that mediocrity, has been better than the reality, due to playing in the SEC.

Yup.  I'd put OkState well ahead of Arky this year, and in the recent past, and UK is probably not as good as Iowa State.  Right now, the SEC pretty much stinketh overall, with two solid teams at the top, a la OSu and UM of yore.

I've seen SEC refs.  Other than giving preferential treatment to Alabama and whoever else they think has a shot at the CFP, they're better than most other conferences' refs.
