I don't much care to listen to a lot of The Beatles music. However, they were responsible for an outright musical revolution that became the status quo that us fortysomethings know about music.

Before The Beatles, music groups weren't really that important. A publishing house would have a pool of song writers. They'd create some tunes and grab whatever talent they had on hand to perform it. The musicians were usually contracted, and only the singers were of any name value (the musicians were incredibly talented, but usually went unrecognized).

The Beatles broke that mould by being the creative force for their own stuff. They alone were responsible for crafting their own art practically from the ground up. After touring relentlessly with performance friendly pop tunes, they more or less retired from touring and began to speak their mind. Their popularity allowed them to explore styles and themes that would be considered unsafe and therefore unprofitable for a publishing house.

Bands creating dangerous art (some worthwhile, some garbage) is what we know as normal today (if "today" means "30 years ago"). However, I can see if you grew up with The Supremes or Dion (still talented artists) performing Brill Building standards, the creativity and revolution brought by The Beatles would forever ingrain them as the top of the mountain.
Where do you put Buddy Holly in that story, Mr. Tulip?
Seems to me that he and the Crickets were something like the Beatles before the Beatles, and they certainly took some inspiration from him.
He wrote at least some of his own music too.
Some noteworthy singer-songwriters started at the Brill Building or its equivalent.  Neil Diamond and Carole King come to mind.

Oh heck yes!

Commenting on musical trends will always risk painting with a broad brush. There were many fantastic artists and tons of creative talent employed by publishing houses. Just because they were working in teams, sharing creative duties, doesn't mean they weren't talented or their compositions should be discounted. They still sought out the best, and they usually got it.

The Beatles represented a shift in where the creative force would lay. Frank Sinatra did the same thing when he declared that his talent was sufficient that he should be the focus of the music - rather than the orchestra leader which was the standard for the time. Frank brought the spotlight to the vocals.

"The Beatles" chose that name, in fact, because of their love of "The Crickets" (who were almost "The Beetles" themselves). There were lots of talented musicians who owned their own creative processes. However, The Beatles are largely credited with breaking open pop music from the publishers. Studios would wield a lot of creative influence for several decades (The Beatles have an agreement with a computer company, because they trademarked "Apple Music" first as their in house label) giving us Sun Records, Muscle Shoals, Motown, etc.

We used to monetize sheet music. Performers would only play the music so that customers would go buy the sheet music. Then, we obviously sold physical recorded media (records, tapes, CDs, etc). The next trend is less obvious (they never are without hindsight). Music might support itself through touring, or perhaps the era of the "music business" is simply coming to its natural end.

Another somewhat controversial opinion I hold about music, is that I don't like The Doors.

I like the Doors, but that is as far as it goes.  Not sure they are in my Top 50.

I wouldn't want to discuss Buddy Holly and the Beatles in the same breath, because it would sound like I don't like Buddy Holly.

Record companies would force the Beatles to do some cover songs on their early albums, because that's just the way things rolled back then.  But the Beatles self-penned songs were so much better.  Except when George Harrison would bust out a sitar song.

As a young teen when the Beatles and Stones hit our shores, they made a huge impact on me.  They opened my eyes to the fantastic musical talents in this country that we couldn't hear on US radio.  I still remember when a reporter asked Paul McCartney what they wanted to see in the US and he replied "Muddy Waters".  The reporter asked where that was.  I was just as confused but I found out who Muddy Waters was later.
In '65 the Stones did one of my favorite TV shows, Shindig.  One of the conditions for appearing was that Howlin' Wolf would get to appear.  It changed my musical tastes forever.

"Don't Worry Baby,"
"Don't Worry Baby," by the Beach Boys

A semi-cover, with Lorrie Morgan

EDIT: I'm seeing gibberish at the top of the post, and I can't seem to get rid of it.  I doesn't show up in "save" or "preview" mode.

And my dislike for The Rolling Stones is mostly based on Mick Jagger's voice, I think. It grates on me.  Overall their music and musicianship are ok.
Led Zeppelin I dig though, so we're cool there.  I also like Cheap Trick and I love Van Halen, so perhaps we have some common ground after all. :)

Zepplin M-a-a-a-n,saw cheap trick back in the day IMO they were just that, had a couple of hits.Stones have some classics, but the Doors - phenomenal - the lyrics coupled with the music IMO is brilliant. The Who was also one of my favorites but I lked Marshall Tucker & Charlie Daniels bands,Allmans & Skynyrd, throw in some George Strait,Willie,Waylon & Johhny and I'm good.Oh and CCR and the Silver Bullet Band also and the Pretenders of course.John Prine,Iris Dement and Emmylou Harris are all right too.Hendix almost forgot him

I hate Bette Midler with a passion
They won't let me give blood anymore. The burnt orange color scares the hell out of the doctors.
