I approve of this hire! It does, however, ironically leave Texas a few DTs light. Shouldn't be a large issue though.

I appreciated Todd Orlando's schemes. His designs were wonderful to watch, but overall too complex. He was undone, though no real fault of his own, by an unprecedented amount of injuries that necessitated a reshuffling of the line up. Players that had been taught exactly what to do under his Swiss Watch machine were put in unfamiliar roles. They could not re-learn their assignments weekly, and the machine predictably went boing.

Ash seems to be more direct, with a scheme that will rely more on Texas' straight up talent than intricate player movements and responsibilities.

I haven't seen consistently good defense in Austin since Greg Robinson was around.  I'll remain skeptical until proven otherwise.  But here's hoping!

His defenses were OK in Madison, but I've been happy with the upgrades since he left to follow BB at Arky (for one year).

His defenses were OK at OSU too, but I think OSU is happy with the upgrades since he left for Rutgers.

In other words, he's OK. You'll see a 4-3 in Austin with him.

"OK" isn't anywhere near good enough in the best offensive league in the country.

I anticipate further disappointment.

It's a funny saying but it's pretty much bulljive in this discussion.

Because, quite simply, I'll he happy with a good defense.

Baylor has one.

Why shouldn't Texas?

When Todd Orlando was new and had all year to implement his schemes with a contiguous set of players, he had a statistically good defense. The rotations and blitz packages were novel. It worked.

After a year of film, and raw players, the opposing coaches found major tendencies and predictabilities. They showed their offenses how to counter those tendencies. Once the raw players started suffering injuries (at a ruinous pace), even the token resistatnce offered became less and less.

What I'm saying is that it's possible to field a good defense once in awhile. Doing it consistently requires constant innovation and updating. Otherwise, it requires a new coach.

Does Herman really need a true OC for his team? He calls the plays, no?
