I like marching bands.  I can't play an instrument and can't carry a tune in a bucket, but I like marching bands.

I get a lot of kids from our state champion band in my AP classes.  They're always taking other AP classes as well.  And the band plays more than the state championship football team.

In band it was always okay to be a nerd and make good grades.  In fact it was pretty much expected.

When I was in high school, the jocks made fun of any of "their own" that actually cared about school and worked to make good grades.  Observing the HS-aged kids of many of my friends, that doesn't seem to be the case-- as much-- as it used to be.  But it's still there at least somewhat.

So I'm glad my daughter loves band so much, and I hope my son wants to do it, and enjoys it, too.  I want them to be around peers that raise them up and support them in their academic endeavors.

In our high school (Texas City) we didnt have any of that drama

in fact so many of us football players were dating band members that would have been impossible

my future wife was in the band so all was good in the world

Guess the answer to this was ultimately... YES!  Nice win, Horns looked good against a very bad team, but there have been plenty of times when the Horns looked bad against bad teams in their opener, so this is a net plus.

Theres a lot to be said for just going out and doing what youre supposed to do

Last night they did that

Yes UTEP is a bad team but in the past that sometimes didnt matter

it looked like the Horns are well coached and really made few bonehead mistakes

well see in two weeks (off next week) if this team is for real

I think the current Horns have more talent at every position than any Texas team since Colt's senior year.  Actually, probably since his junior year, which was actually a better team than the one that played for the NC in 2009.

I was a HS "jock", basketball and baseball, and was decent, and I made good grades (usually) in the top rated classes.  I don't recall that anyone made fun of me for that.

I think it was useful in developing some independence as I didn't have a natural group.  I hung with the nerds at times and with the jocks fairly often.  I was never in the "super cool popular group with the cheerleaders" though I knew several of them pretty well.  Several of them were in the top level classes too and were really pretty, intimidatingly so.

I teach a "top level class," and I have had some female students like that.

Hook Em

Way to go Horns

Nothing like getting 4 turnovers to win a game

Hope you guys can beat K-State and ISU.  You'll have to win the turnover battles again, I think.

Thats the plan but we really have our work cut out for us

If you look at the stats of the OSU game theres just no way we should have won

but I guess thats why you play the game instead of just talking about it

For sure.  Texas made clutch plays when they needed to, something that was notably absent in the games against Tech and TCU, and only present in the 4th Q against OU.

I figured this would have been a 3-4 TD loss, and aside from turnovers the stats would support that.  But the longer Texas kept it close, the worse it was for oSu, because although this Texas team is a mess from the coaching/development viewpoint, there's still a ton of talent on the roster.  And in close games, it only takes a play or two for talent to make the difference.
