Hope is a bad thing.  But, well, there you have it.

I'd always rather win than lose, and today the team showed a heck of a lot of grit, and they also really curtailed the undisciplined penalties and such.  There's always been talent on this team.  Coordination, cohesion, has been lacking. But today was a good day.

I would bet any of us who played competitive sports can recall games where our team either excelled unaccountably or just played poorly for some vague reason.  I tend to think it's statistics.  You look awful one week and then fairly decent the next, and of course your opponent has something to do with it.  Take a team like UNC for example, a decent enough team now, nowhere near top ten even when they were ranked there,  they looked bad twice, and then looked pretty good.  There is enough randomness in college football for that to happen with "pretty good teams".  A really great team will just dominate nearly every time out.  And even a not quite mediocre team will look good on occasion.

fans (fanatics) don't want to accept that our team "just played poorly for some vague reason"

Yeah.  I think about how often in games I watch where I don't care who wins that Side A just has "bad luck", a pass is dropped at a key point, holding is called on a big play, a receiver is an inch OB, or not, a tipped pass is caught, or not, the D gets into the wrong formation, the O has a false start,  ...

A lot of probabilities involved.

That's one of my reasons for enjoying college football. The players are usually large enough to play the game at the adult level, but there's still such a wide variance of precision that utter random stuff can influence the outcome. Kind of like watching Major Leaguers play Little League ball.

Really, looking across college football, lots of "contender" teams are underwhelming. It's almost like something prevented them from receiving in-person coaching on a playing surface for, I dunno, 6 months!

college FB is more then just the players however

Its the fans and the bands

its age old traditions that spring forth before and during the game

going to a college football game is an experience not just something to do
