I was with a person in my industry (at a conference) who is a serious soccer watcher. He admitted he's part of the snobby set that is pooh poohing the proliferation of 'set plays' in soccer. In his words, it's the baseball TTO version of soccer. (three true outcome). apparently historically it was a sign of unserious/gimmicky soccer to run 'set plays' and now one of the zillion EU leagues started doing this as the metrics suggest it is 'the' way to maximize goal scoring, a lot more and now everyone copies. I guess the corners/throw ins have become much more formal in their strategic execution...
