International football players could stand to flop less, but there's a reason they do it--fouls are a little more precise / nuanced than in other sports, and they want "to help the referees see the foul." That's unfortunate. But the game is beautiful and exciting when played well. And it's being played well right now. Because of the low scoring nature of it, it makes underdogs feel like they have a chance (even when they really do not). The global nature of the game is also remarkable. There is no tournament like it, not even the Olympics.
no one, and i mean no one flops like NBA players. NBA is basically unwatchable now because of it.

I just didn't know the water breaks/commercial breaks were a thing.

But the acting like you have an open fracture when a guy almost comes in contact with you?  Embarrassing.

I was with  a person in my industry (at a conference) who is a serious soccer watcher.   He admitted he's part of the snobby set that is pooh poohing the proliferation of 'set plays' in soccer.     In his words, it's the baseball TTO version of soccer.  (three true outcome).    apparently historically it was a sign of unserious/gimmicky soccer to run 'set plays' and now one of the zillion EU leagues started doing this as the metrics suggest it is 'the' way to maximize goal scoring, a lot more and now everyone copies.   I guess the corners/throw ins have become much more formal in their strategic execution...

these are all this guy's words.

i kept wondering,....this is bad.....why?

Maybe traditional soccer is more like jazz and this set play way is like written music?  A more boring strategy being best makes it less fun to watch (tto ~ baseball)?

Three true outcomes.  Guys trying to hit home runs, walk  pitchers trying for strikeouts.

watched most of that match last night at the Tallgrass Taphouse
I'd have rather watched the CWS but not enough to bother the bartender to change the channel

Soccer is a players' sport, not a coaches' sport. It is about open space and free flowing decision making in the moment. That said, there is no professional team in the modern game that doesn't run set plays on restarts (free kicks, corners, etc.). And yes, there is more and more work going into designing them, but they all break down pretty fast once the ball is in play. Likewise, despite the freedom and player-based decision making, all professional teams are running a strategy; some are very deliberate (it's a chess match based on control, e.g., Spain, tends to be more boring), some are more direct (anything to get the ball in front of goal as fast as possible, more exciting, but also more dangerous), but they all have a system; it's just not as rigid as play-calling in American football, the NBA, or even modern baseball.

Also, I went to the Austria vs. Jordan game last night. It was everything an international sporting event should be. Both fan bases were so happy to be there; first time ever for Jordan, first time in 28 years for Austria. The shared joy in and around the stadium was visceral. It was awesome. Probably culturally anticipated, the Jordan fans were more ebullient than the Austrians, but both fan bases were so very positive. I was there supporting Austria (with my brother, an ex pat who lives in Austria, and his step-son; a 30-ish year old Austrian, who was close to what we would consider a college-level soccer player and long ago played against some of the current Austrian stars), but sitting around mostly Jordan fans, it was really fun. When an Austria supporter accidentally knocked over a Jordan fan's cocktail, he immediately went down to the bar and bought a replacement--and even before he did so, the Jordan fan, while frustrated, was also gracious. When Jordan scored its first-ever World Cup goal, the celebratory eruption was something to behold.

I've been in other sporting environments that had a similar feel--the 1993 Badger game against Michigan comes to mind, as does the Badgers' 1994 Rose Bowl; I'm sure the 2010 Badger win over Ohio State was one, but the shared joy by both fanbases, and the mixing of cultures was unlike anything I have ever experienced. It was really, really cool.

LeBron James
I don't watch basketball, but I have a hard time believing anything Lebron James does is anywhere close to what soccer players do on the regular.  James mostly whines, right?
How often does he writhe around on the ground like his lower leg is dangling at a right angle from the center of his shin after barely being touched?

Can't believe they didn't have a Brit on the call for England-Croatia.

British accents on a call for anything is rough.

Golf would be muted on my TV if not for Jim Nantz.

Ever try to talk with a Brit on the phone? May as well be a German.
