Computers are an overrated invention, imo. They don't really do anything that we couldn't do before, they just do it faster and more efficient.

But they sure have saved a lot of trees.
Okay, helmet team fan.

Everyone coast to coast could always find Ohio State scores, news, info, etc.

You think anyone in 1980s California could find the latest Purdue info?

I think the addition of the internet turned the computer into something much more then when they originally came out

I mean, that speed changed the world in untold profound ways. Same argument could be made of the internal combustion engine. We could move all the same things before, jut much, much slower.

I wonder what inventions are underrated. Maybe some mundane food processing thing.

There was probably some 800 number you could call and get all of the scores.

Yeah, it made things instantaneous that would take hours/days/weeks in the past. But compared to how much the world changed over the seventy years prior to the 50s, the inventions pretty much came to a standstill after that. Mostly just improvements on the stuff that we already had by then.

Sell me on cursive.  What's the utility of it?
there is none today
back in the day, there was a signature needed for legal documents

Have any of you noticed that todays youth have a problem writing in the cursive fashion

I think the advent of computers texting etc has reduced the number of folks that know how to write in cursive

I might’ve been among the last school age to ever be bothered with cursive writing - one of the most outdated practices expected between people. The emphasis of cursive conversely deemphasizes print writing which is much more readable and thus useful for all things business.

Cursive writing had its place 125-250 years ago, when part of being a competent politician, judge, and lawyer was to practice excellent, artful handwriting. Since then cursive writing has strangely kept its status as high class signifier while morphing into a convenience for the writer yet an inconvenience for the reader. IMO this started around the 1890s. I say this because I collect antique postcards dating back to the civil war and there’s a noted falloff in the quality of casual cursive toward the end of the 1800s.

Along with it’s lack of readability, my other frustration with a modern use of cursive writing is its common pretentiousness. The writer can write as illegible as they want but it’s OK because it’s cursive while the reader is stuck with the pressuring of trying to read it while also worrying that by not being able to interpret someone’s awful handwriting they risk being perceived as unable to read cursive, and thus less educated.

Not being able to read someone’s cursive writing is 90% of the time not being able to read someone’s lazy, inconsiderate handwriting.

Good riddance to cursive.

Aside from computers, they pretty much had everything that we have today by the 50s; electricity, running water, phones, cars, televisions, record players, etc.

At this point anyone under 80 grew up in a fairly modern world.
We could get into a big fight about why this is true.  Hint:  it has to do with big corporations, the status quo, and income inequality.
.
But I won't start us down that path.

In Back to the Future 2, 1955 Biff figures out that the sports almanac was legit when they were giving Big Ten scores on the radio.

Thats just not true

plus in most states when you vote early you are supposed to sign the envelope the voting slip goes in to be mailed back

what I think is that most folks learn how to sign their name in cursive but that all

If you started with $100, I wonder what's the fewest bets you'd have to make to win back $1 million.  3?  4?  10?
