Sounds awesome, although I'm sorry that you missed out on the California coastal redwoods. My earliest family vacation memories are of staying in a cabin on the Smith River (the only undammed river in the west, allegedly) near Crescent City. We went there many summers in a row, until I was about 10, I think, and I went back a couple of times in my early 20s. It's a beautiful place (and home of the Forest Moon of Endor). But the roads have always been tricky. Back then it was negotiating with massive lumber trucks--and it might still be.

Side note: in NorCal, when we hear people refer to freeways with a "the" in front of it, we think those are LA/SoCal people, as in "the 5," "the 110," or, as above, "the 101." Here, I take 101 to 92, then south on 1 (to get to the coast that Fearless and his daughters visited). In LA, they would take "the 101 to the 92, then south on the 1." I'm curious if that's more common nationwide than I realized (referring to the freeway with a "the" in front of it)?
No I think you're right.  I don't do the "the" thing, except when I'm talking to LA people, and more specifically, when I'm talking to LA people about roads in LA.

I would never tell someone in Austin, regardless of whether or not they're from LA, that I'm going to take "the 35 to the 183 to the 620."  I'd say, "I'll be taking I-35 to 183 and then turn on 620."

Never* heard the "the" thing outside of SoCal. It's weird, but it fits there.

* I have heard SoCal transplants in the PHX area refer to "the 10" and "the 101" and "the 202" and I'm now fully convinced they moved to PHX to make it as weird as SoCal is.

Have you noticed this @Riffraft ?

Any Spain experts here?

We're going this Fall and then coming back on the ship like normal. We've been to Barcelona and Valencia.

I'm planning on getting a flight to Madrid and spend a few days there. Then take the train South to Coastal cities. The ship leaves from Malaga.

Anyone? Need a hand here please.

I've only visited Spain, never worked or lived there, so I'm no help.  I've visited Barcelona and Madrid.  Always wanted to hit Valencia, Malaga, and maybe the island of Mallorca.

The islands are really great. Mallorca is fantastic.

Madrid is great...

GO TO GRANADA / the ALHAMBRA.

That is all.

(Barcelona is cool, too; and my family really like Seville--they went without me because someone had to pay for the trip...) :-)

Thanks. How many days do we need in Madrid?

For Madrid probably a couple is "enough." Some great museums and city architecture worth seeing, and having a coffee/snack on a public square.

Not least of which because, if you did, you'd be stuck in traffic literally all day.

My one and only visit to SoCal many years ago, I heard that a lot.  You won't hear that in the South, or in any part of Texas I've frequented.

Another odd thing to my ears when I was there--although this may not be specific to LA dwellers, since you just used it--they called interstate highways the freeway.  Freeway is not a term I'm used to hearing.  People in the places I've lived say "take the interstate," or "take I-10," but they won't say "take the freeway."

In Illinois, it's Tollway or Expressway. They are all under construction at all times, and it never stops, except for winter.
