The GNX was well known at the time.  So folks like to pretend now that it was some kind of sneaky racer, but it wasn't.

Don't care which one is technically superior, I'm going with the Hemi-Cuda in manual.

Chevelles are pretty cool, but I've always loved the look of that Cuda.  That'd be my pick.

Of course I'd take the same model year Mustang over either one.

The Mustang is not a direct competitor of these, right? That would be the Camaro?

What was Ford's answer to the Chevelle, Cuda, 442, GTO, etc.?

Maybe the Torino? But I think Ford relied on the Mustang as a multi-segment threat, dependent more on the options (i.e. powerplant) than the body style.

I'd consider all of those classified as "muscle cars" as competitors.  The early Mustangs were more pony car than muscle car but by 1970 the Mustang was well into that segment.

But if we're splitting hairs then I'd say the Cuda and Challenger were more closely direct competitors to the Mustang and the Chevelle was more like the GTO.

FoMoCo also had the Mercury Cougar which competed in that market, and then the aforementioned Gran Torino.

The Chevelle, GTO, 442, Charger-- those were all more like sedans or family coupes in body style.  They were muscle cars that were based more on family cars.

The Mustang started the trend of the long hood and short back deck.  It's more pronounced on the coupe than the fastback but the same basic lines are there.  This is where the Camaro, Firebird, Barracuda, Challenger, Cougar, all played.

Corvettes were always... something else.  I'd never consider them to be muscle cars.  They were America's sportscar I suppose.  Still are.
