I'm more surprised that the little engines hold together for so long being stressed like that

Yeah reliability on engines these days across the board, is just light-years ahead of where it was 20-40 years ago.

The number of new "sporty" cars using my definition is incredibly tiny today:

Manual transmission
Convertible
Lighter than 2 tons

yes, The paddle shifters on my vette are fun.  

you can push the "M" button for manual and have some fun.  I rarely do it.

I'd guess Cincy would rarely do it.

My last stick was a Porsche with a very firm clutch, and that was when I still drank coffee and smoked cigarettes.

Our Tuscon has flappy paddles, I've only used them in the mountains.  I usually forget they are there.  I view a manual as offering more connected driving, which to me is sporty.  I realize modern automatics are "better".  I miss shifting.  The GTI had a pretty nice manual in it.  

My sporty car now is a Mustang GT with a manual and a drop top.

All depends on what is "fun." I agree that manual shifting in a car is fun. Maybe it isn't as efficient (I know it's not in modern cars), but if all you were after was efficiency, a lot of the cars and trucks in these 309 pages wouldn't be here. If I'm driving something for "sport," I agree, give me a manual.
