After the 1973 oil crisis, every American manufacturer started killing big-block engines. Compression ratios dropped. Horsepower plummeted. Catalytic converters appeared. The era of the big-cube muscle car was ending. But Ford kept offering a 460-cubic-inch V8 in a wood-paneled station wagon. Through 1974. Through 1975. Through 1976, 1977, and 1978. Five years after the oil crisis, you could walk into a Ford dealer and order a Country Squire station wagon with fake wood grain on the sides, three rows of seats, an AM/FM 8-track stereo, power everything, and a 460-cubic-inch big-block V8 under the hood. While the rest of the industry was downsizing, Ford was selling the longest station wagon it had ever built with the largest engine it had ever put in a passenger car.

The 1973-1978 LTD Country Squire was enormous. The addition of 5-mph impact bumpers front and rear made these the longest station wagons Ford ever produced. Over 18 feet of car. 121-inch wheelbase. Eight-passenger seating with the rear-facing third-row jump seats in the cargo area. A cargo floor the size of a twin bed with the rear seats folded. Power tailgate window. Roof rack. Full-size spare tire. The Country Squire came standard with the 400-cubic-inch Cleveland-based V8 (the 400M), which was adequate but sluggish in a car this heavy. The 460 was the option that made the car work. The detuned, emissions-legal 460 made only 202 to 220 HP depending on the year, a fraction of what the same displacement produced in the late 1960s. But it made over 350 lb-ft of torque at low RPM, and that low-end torque was what a 5,000-pound station wagon towing a boat or an Airstream trailer needed. The 460 wasn't fast. It was strong.

The Tucson has more hp also, and I'm sure is faster to 60, can't tow as much.  None of it sporty.

The Equinox my wife had got more horsepower than that beast.

Did it have 350 ft-lb of torque? 

Did it need it?

Your Equinox didn't, no.

But if the Country Squire was regularly used as a towing vehicle, it probably did. 

According to Google the Equinox, with roughly 50 years technological advancement over the Country Squire, has a tow rating of 1,500 lbs. The 1978 Country Squire according to Google had a towing capacity of 7,000 lbs. 

The Country Squire is more akin to a Suburban than an Equinox. 

Station wagons were used for towing pretty regularly back in the day.
