I'm still put out that my parents moved me to Georgia for 8th grade, which is typically state history year, so I got Georgia history instead of Louisiana history.  I bought some history books about Louisiana as an adult which I've skimmed and spot-read, but haven't read through in their entirety.  I learned a fair bit about Texas history from working around the state running title.  So I have a vague working knowledge of three states' histories.....none of which has helped me in the real world.

Just for reference, Texas history is done in the 7th grade here.  8th grade is US history.

In the only systems I'm familiar with in Louisiana, and the two I went to for my brief stint in Georiga, 6th grade was World History, 7th grade was American history, and 8th grade was {Your State} History, with the focus starting broad and then narrowing each year.  I guess I thought everybody did it that way.  But of course, I can't even say how the majority of Louisiana and Georgia do it.  My participation was a very small sample size.

Here they do units on Texas and US History in 5th grade as part of "Social Studies" class.  Then 6th grade is sort-of world history, it's not very formal, it's also part of a broader Social Studies curriculum.

Then from 7th onward it gets more formal.  7th is Texas history, 8th is US history, 9th is either World Geography or AP Human Geography, 10th is World History, 11th is US History, and 12th is government and econ.

I don't recall there ever being an "Illinois History" class that I had to take...

I have a pretty great memory so I do recall it from my own experience, but also I have two teenage kids that just recently have gone through all this (or in the case of my son, still going through it) in middle school and high school.

A google search tells me that not all states have a mandatory dedicated "history of your state" course or curriculum.  Texas does (of course, Texas would) but several other states do as well.  Apparently California does.  And then MDT tells us that Georgia and Lousiana do as well.

Yeah, I recall hearing about it at Purdue when I realized everyone I knew from Indiana had taken an Indiana History class. 

And my kids all went through it during 4th grade here... The big thing is that did was a "Mission Project"...
