I like Zin, personally, but it can have a pretty wide range of styles based on where it's grown.

I mean, that's pretty much true of all wines. But it seems like there are certain areas where they tend to specialize the varietal based on the weather. I.e. Paso Robles is pretty heavy with GSM-style wines, Napa pretty heavy with Cabernet Sauvignon, and the Willamette Valley with Pinot Noir.

Whereas you'll find Zin being fairly heavily produced all over California.

My preferred appellation is the Dry Creek Valley: https://www.drycreekvalley.org/wineries/

If you can find any of those, give them a try. I've personally had and enjoyed Comstock, Dry Creek Vineyards, Seghesio, Talty, and Wilson of that list. Dry Creek Vineyards and Seghesio would be the ones I'd say you're most likely to find in a bottle shop outside that region. I *think* Comstock, Talty, and Wilson only sell on property (or via mail).

Oh, and if you ever see one labeled as "Rockpile" Zinfandel, buy it. That's one of the most well-known areas within the area for Zin, and it's fantastic.

Generally agree on dry creek zins.

Curiously, I prefer pinot noirs from Sonoma to Willamette Valley. Probably because I don't really love Pinots.

I think Alexander Valley is pretty solid for cabs (see, Jordan); Alexander Valley Vineyards makes a pretty good, low-priced cab.

Sonoma county has a slew of different microclimates.  I like their zins as well.  Lodi county has a lot of zin, they tend to be higher octane, hotter county.

Mendocino has some neat wineries, much lesser known, but some good quality.

I'm still amazed that Screaming Eagle sauvignon blanc is over $2300 a bottle, if you can find it.

The priciest wines still mostly are from Burgundy.  I THINK if some rich fellow here offered me a bottle of anything I wanted, first I'd say yes, and then I'd select a DRC.  And put it down, probably 20 years from now my heirs would find it and drink it over ice.

Number 8 is not from Burgundy, then 17.  No. 8 is a German riesling desert wine, 17 is Rhone Valley.  Nothing from the US.

I had a boss who retired in Gulf Shores.  I think it would be pretty nice, and probably affordable if you lived a bit off the beach.

Living on a golf course is not really a big money thing here because there are so damn many. I probably paid 15% more to be on the course.
