We're off to Costco to buy 5 items, and of course will stroll out with a shopping cart groaning with stuff....

Taking kids 2 & 3 for their first day of school this year. Happy that the summer is over and we're back to the routine.

He should run circles around the competition in that case!

I recall being in Honors Calculus my freshman year.  I had calculus in HS so I figured it would be a breeze.  Oh contraire.  There were some smart kids in that class, the professor wrote in chalk with one hand and then erased with the other.  Our book had naught to do with the class.  I dimly recall something called Green's Theorem we spent time on, learning to differentiate and integrate was ... passe', not much covered.

Due to the AP, I tested out of freshman calc and when I took multivariate, it was the class designated for the "advanced" kids.

So it wasn't just the run of the mill engineers who had completed first year calc and then had to move on. It was the nerds of nerds.

There was a 12 year old in that class. His mom would drop him off for class every day.

I think I would have preferred the multivariate calc class for the normies.

BTW his job for the last two years has been being a math tutor at Mathnasium...

I mean, the kid is going to UC Berkely for nuclear engineering, because he thinks it's a better path to employment than getting a degree in physics... He can do some math :57:

I took the next math class which was DiffEq, had the same professor, but it wasn't an Honors class, that wasn't offered, so it was pretty normal, except ... his son was in the class.  I think he was 16.  The kid seemed pretty bright.:)

I think after that came Number Theory, which I decided was not for me.  I have zero clue why numbers need a theory.  I then got into computer programming, which I liked a lot.  My second year was pretty brutal, Org Chem, Physics, and German, which was not easy at all.

In my role I have access to a ridiculously powerful analytics platform that I frequently use to aid chairs and faculty in program development and assessment.  Which I will not name here for similar reasons utee and brad won't comment on certain companies/products publicly.  Out of curiosity, I looked up nuclear engineering with a national parameter search.  Granted, some programs may operate under a lesser-used, sneaky CIP code--that does happen--but as far as programs using the standard CIP, there's only 20 schools with nuclear engineering tracks.  UC-Berkeley is 11th by number of completions for 2025, with a whopping 18 graduates last year.

Not many are pulling that weight.

I was surprised to see that Texas A&M lead completions last year with 70, far ahead of #2 UTenn-Knoxville with 39.  Just as well....there are currently only 566 annual job openings for the nuclear engineering jobs using the common SOC.  However, as with other engineering programs, the "Architectural and Engineering Managers" occupation is a huge landing spot for those graduates, whatever that is.  Really good median salary for the nuke E's, and significantly more for the Architectural and Engineering Managers (again, whatever that is).

I narrowed it down to the Cali market just to see what the kid's prospects are and with whom if he wanted/is able to stick around, but, I've now reached the point where I shouldn't say more.  Bright kid with a bright future, I'd say.

Yeah, it's hard... NucE is a fairly small field right now. Generally the sort of field where they just need to keep new graduates coming out to replace the old dudes retiring out...

There's a lot of hype that it might be a field with a lot of promise as nuclear energy is basically non-emitting from a carbon sense, and given that data centers are a huge potential near-term power consumer that would be well-served by nuclear. And then a potential ICEV->BEV transition that might both increase electricity demand while also smoothing out base load (since many owners charge overnight during non-peak hours).

Either way, I think he'll figure it out.
