My impression in European cities is the frequency of people smoking or vaping is MUCH higher than it is around here.  I rarely see anyone here with a cigarette, the vaping thing is more common, but in Europe, it's pervasive.

My wife says young women smoke for weight control.  She did herself back in the day.

Another thing that surprised me in France was the amount of open racism.  I had several dinners en famille with educated people and hear them say things that would be verbotten here even if one believed such things.

They were pouring some terrific wine, so I just listened.

They also often have some "interesting" views about the US.

I've been told that folks gain weight after quitting smoking because food tastes better

You've clearly never been to Europe.
I have.  They just copy our stuff and are 20 years behind.  Maybe more.

They make fun of this fact in many movies.  My favorite was in EuroTrip, where the eastern European guy is citing Miami Vice...in 2010.

After WW II, the U. S. has trailed Europe circa 75-years.

Played golf yesterday. Played at one of the more difficult courses in our rotation, and so it's always harder to post a decent score there.

And oof... I got off to a start! Ended up picking up on the first hole and carding a 10. By the end of six holes, I was already 16 over--damn near averaging triple bogey.

But then, suddenly things started looking up. I ended up making three pars and two bogeys over the next 5 holes, and all told played the final 12 holes only 8 over.

With the first hole only counting as a 7 for handicapping purposes, it ended up as my 2nd-lowest differential in my last 20 rounds and brought my handicap down just over half a stroke.

I wonder if it had anything to do with getting my first beer from the cart lady (too old to be a cart girl lol) on the 6th fairway? :57:

#6, sounds terrible

and you should know that double digit numbers like 10 don't fit in the tiny scorecard boxes - 9 is plenty

All good, but kind of shut down vs an oncoming car, lol.

Made me vividly recall my first driving experience.  I didn't shut down over the oncoming truck, but I bet my knuckles were white from gripping the steering wheel.  It was a pretty narrow road, I was in a truck, the oncoming vehicle was a truck, and I think I just about ran us off the road trying to make sure the oncoming truck had enough room not to clip us.  I put it at about a 4 or 5 on the Harrowing Scale.

Finally had a chance to use my extension pole for my chainsaw this weekend.  Never done that before.  Trimmed up some trees that had branches growing too close to or touching my roof.  Happy that the extension pole worked well.

And happier that at the end of it, none of the limbs I cut off had been attached to my body.

I had essentially the opposite experience at the Half Moon Bay Ocean Course. Front 9 was decent, with one disaster of a hole, but I felt pretty good at the turn; then things went horribly south, and even a bloody mary delivered at 14 didn't help. But the spectacular weather on one of the most beautiful courses I've ever played made up for the tragic score.
Played with my brother's Austrian step-son, who is a much better golfer than me and was a good companion.

Bought our RUSH tickets for the second Tampa show and booked a Hampton hotel nearby that offers a free shuttle to the arena.

Happy, even though it's gonna be a $1,500 evening. Can't take it with ya.

Thus far, today, almost nothing has made me happy, at all.  I'm stewing.
