We visited two ports in Taiwan on our cruise.  I think the tours I contracted were only average, but I recall wondering around on our own in Keelung for a bit in the evening, really with no clue what was happening, some kind of street fair, that maybe is routine.

I'd like to go back on our own, but .....

Probably, it was evening, there were a lot of people out and about.  We had no clue what was being offered and bought.  It was pretty neat ...

Yeah, it's rough. 

Best case for you would maybe be to come see your family in Long Beach for a couple days to break it up.

But LAX->TPE is still a freakin' haul. IIRC it's 12 hours there and about 10 back. 

You just need to pay for the good seats like CD.

I'd like to see Operation Unthinkable turned into a mini-series on Prime or Netflix.

Think of all the different ways that would go, how would it have affected the war in the Pacific, would Hiroshima have turned into Moscow, what happens in China, Korea, and Vietnam...if it was successful, do we even have a Cold War or a Space Race?

Poland has been a wild success story since 1990, having thrown off the yoke of the Soviets.  But if they had the opportunity, as well as a whole, united Germany from 1945 on, what would those countries have been by today?

We flew from here to DFW and then to Seoul.  I managed to pay AA to get into their premium seats, I forget how much the upcharge was, not terrible, but pretty essential for me.  That flight is 14 or so hours.  I managed to sleep, in part because we got up at 3 AM to catch the DFW flight.

I then had a chauffeur at the airport pick us up, dude holding a sign, that was maybe $50 in Seoul, well worth it, direct to hotel, which was a fabulous Conrad.  I'm to the point now of "not going" unless I can afford the premium seats, not Delta Ones, that's crazy talk.

We're looking at Paris in December and premium is about $2100, not bad.

My God you're not recomending that I hope :D. No,nevermind CD ignore that man behind the curtain and go order some for yourself and the misses. Might be the funniest thing I ever saw that made me almost hurl at the same time. Watching Bizarre Foods with Andrew Zimmern,he was off the coast of China if I'm remembering right - that guy could eat the ass out of road kill.

Any way he ordered this stuff in some local dive that the locals considered the Ritz. It looked like a Cold War KGB interrogation cell with literally a light bulb hanging by its cord from the ceiling. They go upstairs in some attic and there are these glass aquariums filled with this spackle and what looks like green algae on the side of the containers from which they are fetching it. Could have been mold with all those healthy active enzymes and bacteria.

So Zimmern shovels in one helping, takes a big gulp and announces this just might be the worst thing he's ever put in his mouth and he thinks he's going to get sick. Coming from a guy who noted that he enjoyed fermented walrus colon but disliked walnuts, raw cookie dough, and hot oatmeal - can't make that sh!t up

Double Eagle II Becomes First Balloon to Cross the Atlantic (1978)
By 1978, there had been at least 14 failed attempts to cross the Atlantic by balloon, during which five people died. One of the failures was that of the Double Eagle I in 1977. A year later, however, Ben Abruzzo, Maxie Anderson, and Larry Newman landed the Double Eagle II in a field in Miserey, France, 137 hours after leaving Presque Isle, Maine.

THIS DAY IN HISTORY: 

Priest Urbain Grandier Burned at the Stake for Witchcraft (1634)
Grandier was a 17th-century French Catholic priest who was accused of bewitching the nuns of the Ursuline convent. Although he was acquitted by an ecclesiastical council, Grandier had published scathing criticisms of Cardinal Richelieu, the chief minister and virtual ruler of France, who arranged to have him re-tried. Accused of having entered a pact with the devil, Grandier was tortured, found guilty, and burned at the stake.

Ultimately, the T-34 suffered the highest overall tank losses of any vehicle in history (losing over 44,000 units)
