Sudden or not, it still hurts the same.

My Dad had a massive heart attack and dropped in the garage at 72, in 2012.

Ma battled cancer for 20 years and died peacefully in hospice* at 73, in 2018.

They both hit bad, and there is nothing anyone can really say or do to make it better.

Over time, I've come to grips. 

Mostly...

Doesn't mean I don't wish I had them back.

* Hospice. That was the hardest decision I ever made. Felt like I was giving her a death sentence there for a long while. She died the night we put her in. I guess it was time.

Condolences to you OAM.  I lost my Mom 7 months ago, to the kind of illness that it was a blessing when she went.  The loss still hits, regardless.

Had to put mom in assisted living after a broken hip,a couple of years later unfortunately fell broke her hip again it was downhill 2 yrs until hospice. The only saving grace was 3 of the 5 of us kids were close around so we rotated visiting or getting her out every 2-3 days and a lot of the neighbors from the old hood stopped by also.And my other two bros came in every 4-6 weeks depending on work for a week end or more

This was a major problem for me.  My mom originally went to a nursing home for Physical Therapy after back surgery but then she never recovered and just ended up staying.  When she went in at first we (family) didn't really have much say.  The hospital just found somewhere that could do the PT and had an opening.  It was a town over so like basically half an hour drive from my town.  I found that people in her age-group (80+) even those who were well and driving consider a "trip" to a town half an hour away the way I consider a trip to Atlanta.  None of her friends would visit. 

Once we accepted that the nursing home was permanent we got her moved to a facility in town and now she has a LOT more visitors.
