No one with his tools would have a plan B, and that's what makes it lazy to say he should have.

Does he want to stay in the NFL?

If not, he needs no Plan B.

If so, he's got very little market value for staying, because he doesn't have a Plan B.

Here, in Bill James' big historical abstract book, he posits that baseball players like Kirby Puckett probably have to be better than average to even get to the big leagues and that MLB players with that body type are probably all above-average because scouts would always argue against them.  They had to overcome that to eventually "make it."

I sort of see the same thing with all-time great QBs - Montana didn't have a special arm or running ability, Brady didn't, Manning didn't, and Brees didn't (esp post-shoulder injury).
Favre did, Marino did, and some others, but they're not considered to be the best in hushed tones over an open fire.
The magical ones are - the ones with guile and happenstance and sheer will....you know, the silliness people come up with when discussing NFL QBs.

Those guys who just had a "good enough" arm HAD to do more in order to be good or great.  If Peyton Manning's dad was a truck driver, he'd have been a decent college QB that most of us kind of remember.  He HAD to be a deep-dive football nerd son-of-a-player who could call his own game in order to "make it."
.
But alas, this is why I usually steer clear of NFL stuff, because the backwards horseshit way QBs are considered drives me insane.  As if 80% of their careers isn't determined by sheer luck.

So, at the highest level, the ability to succeed is more dependent on football IQ rather than raw physical talent.

And this is a problem?

Please explain.

That's not at all what I suggested.  I guess I should've mocked the rating of NFL QB careers harder than I did.
Honestly, I don't care enough about it to bother.
You're right, I'm wrong.

I notice you leave Brees off your list of Peyton/Brady. Brees had all the pocket scientist, field general qualities and threw with elite level accuracy. He had sneaky good running ability, though. He would never be described as a "running QB", but he was elusive in the pocket and very smart about when to scramble for yards. It was just one more thing defenses needed to worry about, and one more thing was enough.
Brees is obviously an all-time great who will walk into the HoF one day. I just happen to think Brady is the best, and Manning probably the 2nd best to ever do it.

This Cam talk is idiocy.

When should Cam Newton have relied on his pocket scientist/field generalness (whatever the fuck THAT means)????
Should he have thrown the ball softer?
Should he have refused to scramble for first downs?
When?
In HS?
College?
On his way to the SB?
.
Fucking idiocy.
And so without his physical tools, he's not smart enough?  What!?
You succeed with the tools you have.  When they're gone, you're no longer effective.
Let's give ole Tom Terrific there an eye patch.  Let's see how great he is then.  I bet he won't be smart enough to be a good NFL QB.
Oh, I know, let's give Peyton Manning downs syndrome!!!  Yes!!  Let's take his intellect away and see how he performs!!!
.
Saying Cam Newton isn't good because he's not smart enough is lazy as hell.
Wtf? You off your meds or something?

Steelers Crap 2021:

Thinking the Steelers bottom out and finish as the AFC North’s worst team. Big Ben is ready to collapse. They’re depending their league worst rushing attack on a rookie, Najee Harris. Which is somehow less of a worry than who might effectively block for him.

In the off season Pittsburgh lost FOUR serviceable starters – Matt Feiler, Alejandro Villanueva, and Pro Bowlers Maurkice Pouncey and David DeCastro. Their replacements, if not rookies, are inexperienced depth players, and to make matters worse, projected starter Zach Banner is out next month with knee injuries.

So along with Big Ben past his shelf life, it’s looking like he’ll be passing behind the worst OL he’s ever taken snaps from. And that could render the already overrated WRs almost useless.

Yeah, at what point do they pull the plug?  The defense is still good enough that they won't be competing for the #1 pick, but they sure look like a 6-10 team to me.

perhaps my comments regarding Cam were a bit lazy.  I just never liked the guy.  Doesn't seem like he made the best decisions along the way.

things didn't go well for him at Florida, because he made some poor decisions

his father taking money at Auburn is on Cam, sorry if you think his father is to blame.

Cam's decision to protect himself and not try to jump on his own fumble in the super bowl sealed the deal for me.

Acting like Superman one moment and then crying about getting hit the next doesn't fly with me either.

yes, he was a tremendous athlete and had a few very good seasons

imo, he's never been accurate enough to be a top QB in the league

and I don't think he's very bright, sorry

Cam and Ben are the two QBs that, if they had gotten calls like Brady, Manning and Rodgers, would have been nearly unstoppable early in their careers.  Because they sought contact, refs allowed it.  If you coughed too close to Brady, it was a flag, and defenses backed off because of it.

But he was what he was, and his talents were never going to age well.  At least Ben had the cannon arm.

Mike McCarthy is awful. That’s all.

Zeke Elliot looks like he’s in great physical shape. So what does Mike McCarthy do?

Give him like 6 carries through 3 quarters and put that Pollard guy in just as much if not more than Zeke.

It’s like McCarthy doesn’t realize you can also run the football sometimes. I can see why Rodgers couldn’t wait for him to leave.

Zeke just isn't that good, wasn't going to win the game vs the Bucs' defense

neither is Zac, but.... it's a better option

That’s a good point - where is Elliot? Disappeared after the 1st Q. As far as Dak goes, he looks fantastic save for his one interception. Over 331 yards passing going into the 4th and playing with perfect command of the offense. Dak used to be the guy that every Monday morning radio show host would go on and on about never throwing for more than 300 yds in a single game. Maybe Dak is worth his 9 figure contract?

Entertaining Kickoff game so far.
