I didn't see any shady stuff in Barcelona either.

Definitely saw some shady in Amsterdam.  No need to freak out, just be alert, as you should be anyway.  It's   cool town, I spent a week there one night.

I've found the closest thing to a geographic backwater that I've ever flown through was LaGuardia. The north terminals of LAX aren't far behind.

Then again, I've never flown through CDG.

I doubt it since Margot was born in Australia
I know.  Has nothing to do with the question.  I'll get off your lawn now.

LaGuardia and JFK are 3rd world airports.   Such an abysmal impression if that's your first experience in NYC.   Newark stinks too.  Logan isn't much better.   Parts of LAX and Miami are horrible too.

I like the very end of the int'l terminal in Miami....you go down a half-flight of stairs, and there you are - the Caribbean!

The NYC airports are "dumps" in the sense they are dark and dirty in a relative sense, but their layout is not all that bizarre.

Anytime you add on multiple times to a thing you end up with a disorganized mess, like hospitals.  Airports are the same.  I think CDG has been enlarged multiple times and the pieces don't fit.  LAX is like that also where you can have to leave security and take a bus and then go back through security for some connections.  I think they are working on a solution (bridge) to fix that.

ATL was built all at once except the new international terminal which was well integrated into the core.

Apparently they are looking at adding more gates at ATL somehow.  It's nice for us that MARTA goes there, no parking for us.  It takes about 30 minutes by rail to get there.

And the main problem with CDG is July and August when it is simply jammed with people.  I walked in that day to checkin and just saw this mass of people, no lines anywhere.  The wife grabbed me and took me to the Air France checkin area, which was somewhat less mobbed and went to the first class line and sweet talked her way through.  Then we went to another area that had no lines to get through security and she grabbed me and broke into another quais-line.  Being tall, I was spotted by some airport security person who yelled at me to get in back, but the wife didn't let go and the security person went away.  We got through security after about an hour or so, it seemed longer, looking at our watches, and now had to go through immigration, which was mobbed.

We arrived over 3 hours ahead of our flight and got to the gate as they were boarding.  Had the wife not known the angles, we would have missed the flight by hours.  I have never seen the like before or after.  It was August I think.  We don't travel there in August or July any more.

And nobody was on strike as I recall.

Ah, lucky you.  You caught them on their one "good day." ;)
Mostly kidding about the French air strikes.  Well, sort of.  I've actually been caught in two of them over the years.  Fortunately it's when I was working, not traveling for pleasure, so delaying my trip by a day or two only meant one or two more days out of the office.
Italian rail strikes, on the other hand-- look out! :)

I stupidly had only a one hour and a bit layover in CDG on the return flight from Barcelona.  Don't do that.  We made it, barely, running.  Customs was jammed as usual with 2 booths out of 20 open.  It was as bad as Walmart.
The customs agents were probably on strike.
Seems in France someone is always on strike lol.

Best thing I ever did for international travel is to get a Global entry card, nothing like bypassing the custom lines when returning to the USA, also get TSA pre-check on every domestic flight with it.

The French don't care about any Global Entry Card.  We got in the Sky Priority lane fortunately.  The workers were not on strike.

Unlike the US, you have to pass immigration when leaving the Schengen Zone.

Rather than continuously bump the M-UMd thread for officiating improprieties, I figure this should go here. And though equanimity is always the way to go if you can pull it off, seriously, how is the whole damn football world not losing its mind over this one:

It's probably, um, not good for the game if guys with executive offices can call up and say "No, change it now. That's not the call you're going to make."

Also, how on Earth did this guy make the phone call in time?
