I think you mean "Happy Indigenous People's Day!"

I'm not a SJW, but the Indigenous People's Day is much better than Columbus Day.  How people take pride in tradition over facts is beyond me.
Referring to Native Americans as Indians for like 500 years is embarrassing.  Not because it was originally wrong, not because it might be offensive, but because we knew it was wrong for 499 of those years and were too lazy to fix it.

Celebrating a guy who "discovered" a place with millions of people already living there is also embarrassing.  Not because his "discovery" led to many of them being killed, not because it's offensive, but because Columbus didn't discover anything.  Embarrassing.

Meanwhile, we have the Indigenous peoples...who have, honestly, been victimized for 500 years.  They're basically gone, all their dialects and customs - all dying out.  Even the largest tribes' languages will basically be gone in another generation or two.  I mostly respect them for the same reason they "lost" in the grand scheme of things - they lived in balance with their surroundings.  Something our "modern" society simply cannot do.  Yes, given enough time, they would have "advanced" to dominating and polluting their lands, but were never really given the chance.  So they stand, idealized, as being wise enough to live in harmony with nature.

And I've got to say it, again, it's embarrassing that with what we know (not controversial BS as one side will suggest - what we KNOW), the fact that we're unwilling to advance further and live in harmony with nature once again.  Because of quarterly reports.  That's the reason.  We're signing bills to allow poisonous things into our own water supply.  In 2018.  Because we're so advanced.

So while many bleeding hearts might want IPD over CD because of rape or pillage or diseased blankets, I prefer it because it sort of nixes an embarrassment of our culture.  Don't worry, there are plenty of others.

We have pretty good "truth in labeling laws" that for the most part work if you spend a tiny bit of time reading labels or whatever.

A problem at times happens when the labeling requirements become so intrusive that companies come out with massive long lists on "warnings" etc. that no one reads.  I just signed a loan agreement.
Right, the fast-talking voice at the end of the commercial, the tiny label on the back of the bottle or can....it's crap.  The commercial with 29 seconds of colorful, misleading BS vs the 1 second of honest babble.
It's broken.

Human groups have been subjugating and mistreating other human groups for quite a long time.

The Mongols are an interesting case study.  Their influence on modern history is something we often overlook.  They actually had "rules", usually, but the rules were not very nice of course.  They had a major influence on the development of China, Korea, Japan, Russia, Iran, Poland, etc.

Charles Martel is another figure in history that had a major and unexpected influence on the course of history.  His grandson was also pretty great.

I'm fascinated today in how history is so fascinating to me, while back in school it was by far my least favorite subject when I had to take it.  It was painful.

I worked for a company that did quite a lot of advertising.  Basically you have a cadre of pretty smart folks figuring out how they can "bend the rules" and not get caught, versus some rather disinterested government folks who are charged with catching them.

It's an unequal contest, inherently.

My favorite claim was "whiter than white", which actually is technically accurate.

I'm in the camp that believes that American cheese is not real cheese.  It's just not.  I much prefer sharp cheddar and Muenster (when I'm in the mood for something milder).

I will say this though.  Big Macs would be closer to $7 if they used actual cheddar rather than the processed junk they currently put on their sandwiches.

Oh, and speaking of french fries.  I've never tried it, but I'd love to sometime:  can anyone confirm that vinegar on fries is really, really tasty?

And of course there is the "caveat emptor" concept, which can be tough to manage these days.

I'm always struck by the ads that imply that taking "X" will make "Y" better in your life, not the prescription drugs, but the "nutraceuticals".

There is one that basically claims it will keep your mind sharp derived from jellyfish.  I'm not sure how that one stays on the market.

The processed cheese melts and doesn't separate when heated.  If you use "real cheese", you're going to get ugly goo.

I've taken that a little further. I par-boil cut potatoes in a vinegar, salt and water mixture prior to frying or baking. Vinegar is very good with potatoes.

Vinegar is a great way to make your fries stink and taste bad.

1 - of course they have, and with that knowledge, we can either celebrate the innocent/victims or their incompetent/advanced/destroyers.
2 - Same here.  Most especially the hominid evolution class I took and didn't open the book for during the class, but I couldn't put it down the very next semester.  That was dumb.

Because some portion of the population simply believes anything they're told.  Again, embarrassing.
This will make your pecker hard.
This will make your life better.
Tell your doctor this is the drug you want.
This will give you energy.
No one respects women more than me, that I can tell you.
I did not have sexual relations with that woman.
This is all-natural.
Ugh.

Oh yeah.
When I eat fish & chips, I always keep that bottle of malt vinegar beyond just the fish... That stuff goes on the "chips" too. Delicious.

Drugs, i.e. medicines designed to cure or treat disease, are regulated by the FDA. "Dietary supplements" are not.
As long as the dietary supplements don't make actual medical claims to cure or treat a medical condition, they are left alone. So again, the marketing folks need to figure out where that line is and make all sorts of speculative claims that fall short of actual medical claims, and they're left alone by the FDA.

And that's just supplements... Bottles which actually contain the substance on the label. Don't get me started on homeopathy.
