I didn’t bring up the masks because honestly, it seems like something that wouldn’t yield interesting discussion (though the other thing produced more arguing for arguing sake, which I didn’t totally expect).

The mask thing is a good “I should be able to do what I want” topic, but I’m sure plenty of people here would go to the mattresses for, “what you want to do is bad or could be bad, and the goverment should restrict it.” And there isn’t much path there because for a lot of folks, if they wouldn’t want to do it, they don’t see much reason the law should protect it.

The speech thing was more interesting to me becuase it’s an obvious screw up, and I assumed, incorrectly, it wouldn’t immideitly draw folks strongly to its defense, so perhaps some more illuminating chatting about it could happen.

The masks are a clear violation of rights IMO.

The free speech is going to be a non-issue.  If the law is ever engaged at all, it'll be to prevent the kind of violent and damaging assemblies we saw all over the country over the past two years.

Nobody's going to try to stop a pep rally that runs overtime.  I realize you see this as an exploitable issue, I just don't think it warrants any real concern.

Hmmm. I obviously don’t like the mask thing, loving freedom and such. It’s a bit odd because it comes with attached theoretical guard rails, and all of those things are likely prohibited anyway, granted, they’re somewhat vague (basically, you can’t wear a mask to avoid ID while obstructing school rules or the law, when intimidating others or interfering with a school employee or LEO’s performance of a duty)

The speech thing is odd because the way it’s written attached to the curfew is such a titanic violation of rights that it leads to basically pretending it doesn’t mean anything. Which could be bad, but also gets us through the day.

One odd part about the talking curfew is that it’s not exactly mandated as much as a policy that includes it is mandated. Which is going to create some questions of who to sue. Up to this point I’d not been thinking about groups like FIRE, but they’ll probably get into something there.

Banning masks totally strikes me as a thing that won't hold up in court.

I still see a few folks out and about wearing a mask, I presume they are immunicompromised or just scared of something.

Just based on the text of the law, the mask thing only applies in some somewhat narrow situations.

It can still get bent, but it’s not like it outlaws just wearing one around campus.

What about bank robbers?  They have rights too.

They do not have the right to assemble and protest whilst wearing their masks after 10 PM and before 8 AM on a college campus in the state of Texas.

Rob banks? The law says they can’t talk at all!

As long as they're silent they can rob all the banks they want.  I don't think that's even a crime in 2025.

There are still some states where crime is illegal.   :72:

This is an interesting point, release of some of the Epstein stuff is now in the hands of the court system.
