Likely at least a few years away given how slowly these cases move.
OK, the choice is between:

1.  $16 million now for a library, or

2.  Clear discovery of major malfeasance by a major news network in 3 years.

I'd prefer item 2 were I them.

We don't know the whole story, but people were guilty of something and were fired.

That's all we know. I wish we could know more, but it's over. Oh well.
So they were sued, but the lawsuit is so flimsy It can’t actually say it was about anything illegal? Seems telling.

As for insisting of firing means guilt, I’ll spell it out with the Chicago example. if a firm in the city had fired someone because that person has spoke poorly of Mike Madigan, and the company worried Madigan would hurt their business as a result, would that person be guilty of something? I guess by this logic, yes?

What they did was purposefully edit the interview of one of the presidential nominees to make her sound smarter than she is.  While that may not be illegal, it is highly dishonest and not what the 1st amendment was intended for.

But now Gavin Newsom has joined the party!

If the lord won’t help you understand basic concepts, someone here probably can.

So the lawsuit was over something not illegal at all? Interesting. Sure seems to tell us something about the root here.

(If making a pol sound dumber or smarter than they are is highly dishonest, then we best scuttle this thread and most political discussion, we wouldn’t want to dishonor the first amendment thusly)

Eh, bab's claim seems to be that Trump's camp is intimidating CBS into settling with the threat of causing them problems in future business dealings if they don't give in.  That matches the posted definition of extortion well enough to be applicable.

Now, whether or not this assertion from bab is true, is something entirely different.  There's no way to know the truth of that, only Trump's camp and CBS know the actual dealings.

I'll also agree with CD that $16M negotiated is peanuts, but that's true for both camps.  It seems to me like if CBS is actually guilty then they're getting off super-easy, and if it's all a lie then Trump isn't getting much out of it.

Money was obtained. People here have made clear they think it was because of a threat of embarrassing info coming out.

Wow. Figured it out, just like that. Crazy times.

Is Gavin’s lawsuit over something illegal?

The purpose of the 1st amendment is to hold those in power accountable, not for choosing sides.  Why is CBS attempting to tip the scales towards one candidate?

There is where I'd slot it.  Illegal.

Election rigging, also known as voter fraud or electoral fraud, involves intentional, illegal actions to manipulate or influence the outcome of an election. It is considered a serious crime that undermines the integrity of the democratic process and public trust in elections

Setting aside that basic video making someone seem smarter than they are (neither being measurable things) is not illegal, what exactly are the damages and how could they be quantified?

The plaintiff won the election and is the most powerful man on earth.
