I don't know how common sweet tea is in the rest of TX these days.  It used to be a rarity. 
More common now, sadly.

As a kid, the only place in Austin I recall having sweet tea was a BBQ chain out of San Antonio named Bill Miller BBQ.  Absolutely terrible BBQ by the way, but decent fried chicken.  And they had both normal tea, and sweet tea.

This is the only corner of the earth where I've seen sweet tea more vilified than "Cokes".

Neither are good.  "Cokes" are worse.

Also, WTH is up with the northeastern corner of Arizona?

Large Native American population. Those folks tend to have a lot of health issues.

Makes sense.  I've read about the unfortunate problems with alcoholism, a lot of other health issues tend to accompany that.

I have to LOL, because what he says about East Texas is pretty true. My cousins from there made us look like advanced city slickers.

And don't get me wrong, I like East Texas.  I like the Southern culture for the most part.  I just really, REALLY don't like sweet tea, and the creeping advances it's making through the rest of the state. ;)

I was acquaintances with a kid at MSU who was chief of his small tribe, because his father and all of his uncles had died young.  So he had access to a lot of the casino money...and used it to buy a lot of booze for him and his friends.  He was over 300 lbs at age 22, and could already drink a fifth with dinner without noticing.  And he wasnt even living on the reservation at the time, because he said it was depressing.

Took a cross country trip last year, driving through Navajo country—— let’s just say I didn’t feel comfortable, nor safe.  

A unusual experience to be sure.
