it's plainly obvious that they are and have been persecuting the man because he won the Presidential election and is openly against building the largest NATO base in all of Europe and has said he'll shut it down if elected- which he was- and then whoops- can't have that- so election canceled. now....let's jail 'em!

UK & Germany are taking very dark turns towards authoritarianism as well. UK & Germany are fining and arresting people in jail for things they say in public or post on social media. why are we spending all this money in NATO and subsidizing their defense again?

I've seen some British journalists claim the UK has had to empty out a percentage of its previously incarcerated criminals, convicted of "traditional" crimes, in order to have enough room for the Thought Police victims.  

If true, it's already 1984 over there.

It's not that I don't think it's a big deal, it's that I don't see Romania as a barometer on these issues.

Yours and my position are actually pretty close on this, I just don't really give much of a crap about Romania, insofar as it concerns the rest of Europe.  Like I said, the rest of Europe has its own problems, to be sure, and I'm fine with either modifying agreements so that they pay for our defense of their continent, or significantly scaling back our efforts there.

I do believe that the USA still has a significant economic interest in stability in the region, and I also believe that any significant scale-back on US defense activity in the area, is likely going to push nations like Germany into rapid development of their own nuclear defense capability.  That has to be a concern.
