Cutting the crap would reduce student debt for many not on scholarship.

It also gets them into the workforce 1.5 years sooner, paying taxes.
Makes too much sense tell it to congress/dept of education

I experienced this as well. Still graduated, just not with the same degree as I started out with.  I realize now I would have been much better off going to a much better, smaller school than the ginormous state U, or maybe even waiting a couple of years when I was more mature.

Just out of curiosity, what did you finish college with (what degree) or did you finish?
Econ major (so math heavy social-science), comms minor.

I did have to laugh because I once took a sort of undergrad law class, and my math background proved very valuable. It turned out the law word problems were just about what precedent to apply to a given situation. And math was all about what formula or concept to apply to a given problem.

Oh, I don't disagree that there are major problems with the DOE.  If I got into some of them I'd probably get the thread locked again.
I’ve reached that age where my brain goes from “You probably shouldn’t say that.” To “What the hell, let’s see what happens.”

Lincoln, NE — LINCOLN, Neb. — The University of Nebraska System has a significant economic impact on the state, according to a comprehensive study conducted by consulting firm Tripp Umbach. University President Jeffery Gold announced the findings on Tuesday.

Paul Umbach, president and founder of Tripp Umbach, highlighted key points from the report.

"Number one, on a per capita basis, the University of Nebraska does more to impact its state than any other university in the country," Umbach said. "Number two, the University of Nebraska is driven to innovate and grow economic development around the state in every legislative district and every county. And the third thing I want to leave you with is that we’re really just reporting this to show the tip of the iceberg."

The study found that the University of Nebraska System contributes $6.4 billion to the state's economy. It also discovered that one in ten jobs in Nebraska is linked to the university, and there is a $10 return for every $1 of state investment.

Gold emphasized the importance of the university's impact on students and their contributions to the community after graduation.

"I think the message is very simple," Gold said. "That the value proposition of the University of Nebraska is huge and continues to grow."

The report identified two primary ways the system affects Nebraska's business volume: direct expenditures and indirect and direct spending, which provide services back to the school and inject money into the state.

Employers now use college education as a de facto sorting mechanism for job applicants, but for society that's actually counter-productive as it encourages/requires unnecessary expense for unnecessary education for the jobs at hand.
There is a reason for that.

It's slowly changing. Internships combined with community college is gaining a lot of traction.

I don't disagree with you, either here or with the long version.

All I wanted to point out is that federal financial aid is deeply entrenched in the university system, regardless of our opinions on whether or not it should be.  And that IF financial aid suddenly vanished (and nobody is saying it will, or even would if DOE shut down, but it could), a university like mine could stand to shut down completely.  That would not only get rid of the population you opined should not be going to college anyway, it would also get rid of the population you opined should be here.  And I don't think anybody wants that, nor do I think it's what you were suggesting.

I only want to mention it's something that could happen.
Sorting this mess out would be challenging even if we all agreed on where we were going.

Seriously, even if you and I are on the same general page as to the #/% of HS Graduates that SHOULD be going to college, trimming our undergrad system from the current size to a more appropriate size would be messy no matter how well it was handled.

This is where CD would normally  bring up the fact that in Europe something like 38% of high school graduates go on to college and the remainder go on to trade schools and vocational colleges or find other callings, while here in the US it's over 60% that go to universities.

And I would agree with him that we need to place more emphasis on college alternatives for job training and placement.

Not everyone needs to go to college.  Arguably, a large majority don't.

many colleges are merely printing diplomas for $$$

it's more a bottom line driven business for them than a service of education

in other words, they only care about the money

just because it's messy, doesn't mean it shouldn't be handled - even if poorly

Well if there's anything I trust our government to do, it's a poor job!

There is a projected enrollment drop off coming pretty soon. If companies make changes to stop blindly evaluating undergrad degrees, you could see a natural business lead change in a generation or so.

I don't entirely disagree but that mess is personal.  It means going to guys like @MikeDeTiger and saying "Hey, you are out of a job even though you didn't do anything wrong."

I don't mean to infer that he specifically would be one of the ones cut but you can't cut the undergrad system down by 50% without a whole freaking lot of people losing their jobs.  A LOT of pink slips are going to go out and most of them are going to go out to people who don't personally deserve that and didn't personally do anything to cause the problem.
