America has also gotten a lot fatter on average in that time frame

they'll never catch us
I don't believe that, at least not in effect.  I believe there is a limit to fatness and as the USA asymptotically approaches it, Europe will gain quickly.  Theoretically they'll never catch us, but they will eventually get so close, that in effect there is no difference.  Or to be more specific, the difference will not be statistically significant.

We didn't see much fatness during our trips. There is much more here, on percentage.

Austin felt like a healthy place when we visited almost 20 years ago. Seattle, LA, etc. Healthier than what we saw in back in Illinois and Wisconsin.

Yeah Austin is known for being a pretty healthy, fit town.  It's also a fairly young town which contributes to that.

Why honey is bad?  It's high in fructose.

Fructose is, in my view, the really bad actor because of how it's metabolized.  Honey is higher in fructose than HFCS-42 and about the same as 55.

If we used basic corn syrup as sweetner, I think it would be better.  It doesn't taste the same of course.

Different can of course be good, or bad.  I am entirely against RFKJr being anywhere near a position of influence on our health.
I couldn't disagree more on both accounts. Simplifying the comparison if HFCS-42 to honey, solely on the amount of fructose is similar to someone thinking they are eating healthy because they count calories.

Secondly, i'd be surprised if that was your take on RFK Jr, if you read the The Real Anthony Fauci. Too many people simplify the book as a political stance, which tends to show they didn't read it, but the science behind it is spot on.  Lastly, the FDA shouldn't be in charge of banning anything because they are beyond corrupt and anything they do is related to $$$.. And yes, there are incredible lists of substance and compounds that should absolutely be banned because of what they do to the body. We should question banning harmful chemicals?

Carbonated water is fine.

if you go down the rabbit hole of "artificial flavoring" and how companies hide behind that terminology, as you may have already, it's beyond maddening.

We should ban harmful chemicals presuming the dose is at a harmful level.  Selenium, for example, is pretty toxic, but without it, several biochemical processes don't work.

The dose makes the poison.

And I think honey is worse than HFCS42 because of the higher fructose levels.  Fructose, in my mind, backed up by substantial research, is the bad actor.  Table sugar is half fructose.

But, of course, I'm not an epidemiologist, though I worked closely with several over the years.  I once as a joke proposed using palytoxin in our product.  It's supposedly the most toxic nonpeptide known. The epi guy was not amused.

A bit of an aside, glucose comes in two forms, the natural one is D-glucose, the unnatural one is L-glucose.  Both taste the same, but the latter can't be used metabolically, so it has zero Calories.  It's also too expensive to obtain for food.

This is such a weird article for CNBC:

https://www.cnbc.com/2024/11/18/dental-supply-stock-rallies-on-theory-rfks-anti-fluoride-stance-will-prompt-more-dentist-visits.html

The premise of the article is that some dental hygene company is seeing some kind of rally due to RFK wanting to limit fluoride in drinking water.

But then you start looking at the stock chart, and it hardly even looks like anything other than a normal day.

It just seems like the news media goes out of their way to manufacture the news constantly.
