Sometimes I'm astounded at the ignorance of mainstream pop culture 'round here.

I mean, I know the demographic. I don't expect any of you to be able to sing along to Cardi B's WAP feat. Megan Thee Stallion.

But never even having heard of John Legend? That would be like CD in his youth saying "Frank who? Sinatra? Sorry, doesn't ring a bell."
I'm not so sure John Legend is "mainstream" pop culture.

Taylor Swift is, and as you've read, pretty much everyone on this message board has heard of her, and most people on this message board have fairly strong opinions on her, one way or the other.

John Legend is not like that.  He's more of a musician's musician. And he does a lot of collaborating and producing, where he's not the main star of the activity. Personally I'm very familiar with pop music, but could still only identify maybe a couple of his songs.

I have a two DVD set of the concert performed at the R&R Hall of Fame 25th anniversary that is awesome and features Legend and legends galore.

my daughters are 28 and 30 - been out of the house for a few years

so, .......... I'm an old Boomer and obviously out of touch
His big hit, All of Me, hit #1 on the charts in 2013, so they'd have still been around.

That was a song that was inoffensive enough to have cross-genre appeal and it was everywhere that year. I don't listen to pop stations but I know I heard that song enough to be MORE than sick of it.

I'd call his music fusion of jazz, folk, rock, and classical piano, no drums I think or electric stuff.  We probably all heard it and didn't know it.  To me, it's a bit insipid, but not annoying.

Hey now, I could sing along to WAP way more competently than I could any Taylor Swift song

I did find a Taylor Swift song on youtube once to see what the fuss was about

maybe I heard All of Me, hit #1 on the charts in 2013 - don't remember

I still listen to old blue eyes

I would argue that he is part of mainstream pop, culture, owing to his many TV appearances and his marriage.

but I don’t think he has the depth of big hits to be musically considered in there.

And I'd argue that he's not very mainstream at all, given how many folks on this message board had no idea who he was.

He might participate in mainstream pop culture, but he's certainly not very well known in mainstream pop culture.

Also I had no idea who his wife was until you mentioned that and I just looked it up.  I don't follow that stuff and don't really care about it, and clearly I'm not alone on that.

Yeah, I guess it just seems like this demographic would know of him more than most. I.e. even if you don't listen to him or his songs, your wife/girlfriend does. Or at least has an opinion on him (my wife finds him annoying).
