I suspect a lot of Presidents are manipulated by their "staff".  The chief of staff controls who has access.  The folks who bring "data" can be massaged, "Hey, don't put this in the Daily Brief, he doesn't like that." or "If we present it THIS way, he'll do what we want."

And of course they weigh the political optics of any important decision heavily.  Should we bomb the Houthis?  How does that play for us with the public?  The question as to whether it would be effective is far down the list, but the optics may be good either way.  I've read a President makes over 4,000 appointments.  I think the vast majority, if not all, are selected for him.  Ambassador to Peru?  This fellow donated to our campaign, he's in.

Of course, sometimes when a President really does make a decision, it's a bad one.

Alright, my i s c & a aggie wife seems to have finally gotten her stuff together, so we're headed into the racetrack now.  Should be a fun weekend of racing and football.  I have a friend who has 2 extra tickets to the Texas-Georgia game tomorrow night so it's likely we'll duck out of COTA and over to DKR-Texas Memorial Stadium tomorrow evening.  Hoping for a good game and a Longhorn win over CD's golderned Dawgs. :)

Everybody have a great weekend!

If Harris wins, this exactly.

If Trump wins, he won't have a staff because nobody wants to work for him.

Oh, I don’t think that second part is true. I feel like kind of the point when a lot of people voted for him last time was the hope that his staff would just run things.

The downside now is that he is still an extremely influenceable person, it’s just that he’s gonna surround himself with some real freaks.

My take on Trump is he likes sychophants, he'll appoint folks to his staff that are "Yes Men".  They can still influence him some by how they present information.

My take on Harris is per above, she won't make any decisions.  She'll sign whatever is put before her and give speeches written for her.

One of several new apartment buildings near us topped out, nice day today, a bit chilly.

If you happen to come to MB Stadium, that area is changing rapidly, a cluster of new buildings called Centennial Yards.  I'm curious to see how this turns out, supposed to include "entertainment" venues.

U.S. deficit tops $1.8 trillion in 2024 (cnbc.com)

  • The Biden administration rang up a budget topping $1.8 trillion in fiscal 2024, up more than 8% from the previous year and the third highest on record.
  • Interest expense for the year totaled $1.16 trillion, the first time that figure has topped the trillion-dollar level.

This is hardly ever discussed in the "campaign".  Both candidate have proposals that would make the deficit worse.  It's going to hit us hard some day, but I suspect folks think "Well, it's been OK up til now."

Anyone who cares about the future of our country, our kids, should be bothered by this.

Both parties suck on this.

It's true, but I'm not even sure it's a matter of political party, or politicians, or our political system.

It's humans. We suck at this. Our nature is to try to have instant gratification and delayed consequences. Whether it's the 65" TV that I want today but sure I'll just pay it down on the credit card later, or whether it's the cupcake I want today but I'll just make sure to work out to burn those calories later

We want government benefits today but we want to pay for them later. And the politicians we elect are more than happy to give them to us. They're not willing to be the parents in the relationship that should tell the kids that they have to finish their broccoli before they can have dessert, because unlike actual parents, we can elect new ones that will give us what we want.

Agree completely.

And it is beyond irritating.  Fro is right on this one….the masses.

I am fascinated by how fascinated imagery is to males in particular.  There are quite a few young very attractive females around here, I see them out in those tight pants, or less, in the park or around two pretty often.  I guess they know what they are doing to "us".  When I'm with my wife, I pretend not to look in their direction.

When I'm running, she's not with me though.  The other day I chatted briefly with a 76 year old black woman who was running, she asked me how old I was, and said she was 76, she didn't look 76, maybe 66, I told her so.  She laughed.  I really admire the older folks out there running, we're old slow of molasses in winter time, but we're running.  The Atlanta Track Club shows up every so often, usually 5-6 guys and 5-6 gals, the gals are easy on the eye too.  The guys blow by me like a hurricane, I drift off the track when I hear them coming.  One thing they run is 1000 meters, then walk, then run it again, pretty much flat out.  Their coach told me they try and run at a 5 minute mile pace for thhe km.  Granted they are 25ish, and when I was 25ish I could run pretty well, not 5 minute miles, but I used to run 18 minute 3 miles.  LOONNNGG ago.

Anyway, I digress, the lady trackers are attractive and then some.  I should've joined some track club when I was 20ish.

Someone said it would doom "democracy" when voters realized they could vote themselves money by electing politicians who promise it.
