I decided a while back I couldn't vote for someone I didn't think was "OK".  Basically, I stopped voting.  And you know what?  The lack of my vote impacted zero election outcomes even at the local level.  Give me a candidate who is at least "OK" and maybe I'll vote for the person.  My wife wants to vote this time around, so I'll probably go with her and write someone in for President, and then look at all the judges and dogcatchers on the ballot and just guess.

A very liberal person would likely opine Harris is pretty conservative, or moderate at most, it's normal.  The frame of reference is different.  And she has made an effort to appear to be more moderate by changing a number of her positions and being silent about others, which is typical.  Most politicians, I think, are "I'll say anything to get elected."

Incidentally, I sent a small contribution to sfbadger's wife's campaign for the House a while back.  I know she has integrity and would make a serious effort to "do good".  Whether she is liberal or conservative for me pales in importance.

I'm almost at the point that I'd vote for either one if they'd stop having random texts sent to me!

So my cousins wife passed away yesterday, I've heard it was a brain aneurysm, but I also suspect a fentanyl OD.  She was suspected to be a user.  That makes the 3rd person I personally know this year that has (possibly) died from a FOD.  They say it's the number 1 killer of young people under the age of 50.

Poor guy, I talked to him yesterday, he was pretty choked up.  He's not had an easy life.

My sister passed two weeks back.  The funeral had to be delayed because of Helene.  She was five years my senior and had suffered for a several years with a very horrible disease that left her unable to move or speak.  It's somewhat akin to Lou Gehrig's.

She was laid to rest with her second husband (who was a very fine man) at Georgia Military Cemetery.

It comes for us all.

Did she though?  What did she do to consolidate support?  Biden dropped out, and then the media, who just weeks and months before were pretty much ignoring her and even saying she was one of the most disliked VP's ever suddenly came out like they were with her all along.

I believe she was in the middle of her first term as a Senator, was nothing special, before getting picked for VP in large part due to DEI.  I'm not sure how stupid you think I am, but Biden did say he was going to pick a female VP, and probably one of color.  He didn't say I'm picking the best person for the job, he said he was going to pick a woman of color.
She wasn't popular. I thought someone would challenge her for the nomination - Gavin Newsome or someone else among the gaggle of characters. But no one did, which is certainly a credit to her.

I certainly don't think you are stupid, and not interesting in any long running debates about who people should vote for. I just thought it was funny to see a the reasons presented you can't possibly vote for her is due to her not being picked through a primary process and that she didn't lower housing costs while she was a prosecutor in San Francisco.

well, lucky for most of us, and especially folks in Texas....

It doesn't matter if you vote for a presidential candidate or which one you vote for.
Texas is a RED state.  All electoral votes are going to Trump.

so, Gig'em, don't sweat it

I don't think either party is being very smart.  They both seem terrified to take their bases for granted, when their bases have never been more radical and blindly following.

If either side did it, they'd win in a walk.  But I'm probably wrong.
The cause of this, I think, is the limited turnout in primaries.

Specifically, moderates don't vote in primaries.

Imagine for a minute that you get 20% turnout in a primary and 50% turnout in a general election.

In the primary that turnout is halved because half is R and half is D.  We are already down to 10% on each side and you only need half of that to win.  Consequently, the most liberal 5% of voters decide the Democratic nominee and the most conservative 5% decide the Republican nominee.

Then we get to the general election and a bunch of the 90% in the middle just walk away (see @Cincydawg 's post above).  The rest are stuck choosing between someone Conservative that they don't like and someone Liberal that they don't like.

This would NEVER fly, but I'd make voting in the primary* a precondition for voting in the general election.

I wouldn't actually require people to pick a party, just that they show up.

I wasn't trying to say that *you* think I'm stupid, just that *they* must think that.  Sorry for the mis-statement.  I respect everybody on this board.

Well, I'm aware of Texas being RED, but I do wonder how much longer.  They're saying that Ted Cruz is in danger of losing to Collin Alred.  I'm not sure about that.  Most of the ads now revolve around abortion.  This guy is pro- this, this guy is anti- that.  That and cross-dressing men who want to dunk on little girls.

Forget the real issues.  National Debt, medicare, and social security.  Let's worry about cross dressing men dunking on little girls.

the fear mongering tactics are ridiculous on both sides

Apparently a lot of folks believe the trans issue will drive folks to the polls. Gets people feeling stuff, for sure.
