The psychology of beating debt is kind of interesting.

In theory, all effort and a lot of assets, including at least looking into debt consolidation, should be aimed at credit cards first. It feels like that requires a certain level of faith in an overall outcome in process. And that can be tricky when you’re in the thick of it.

yup, I attacked credit cards first with a personal loan and then all short term debt including the personal loan, before worrying about a rainy day fund

Never had any credit card debt. Always paid it off every month, and still do.

I didn't either

I also was forced to pay the student loans to the U of Iowa for the Ex

I dropped out so I wouldn't have a large student loan debt

I write no checks. everything that can be autopaid is on autopay.  Everything that can be charged on a credit card is paid by credit card and paid off every month.  Because how much I charge annually my wife flies free with me on Southwest and I flight free fairly frequently because of points.  Also I get a number of free rooms a year at hilton because of points. With retirement and expenses going down, next year will probably be the last year of my wife flying free with me.

My only real "bad" financial decision is I lease a car every 3 years.  I can budget the payment and then not worry about unexpected repair cost and such. Yes it would be cheaper to buy and then drive the car as long as I can.  Repair bill and such would probably be cheaper in the long run.  I use to do that, actually use to do almost all my own repairs, but found the peace of mind and my time was worth the cost.

Same for us, with American, Hertz and Hilton. We had a ton of trips booked for this Fall and I was able to get all my points back, free of charge, which was nice. Hertz and Hilton refunded me after I explained the circumstances, which was also very nice.

Same for me with my ex. I made good money, and she didn't. I had no student debt, except hers.

The divorce happened while we were still in school. I finished a year before her and was only responsible for her debt up until it was finalized.

She ended staying even longer for her M.S. in Civil Engineering. I think she owns her own business.

Mine was a spendthrift and there was no rainy day fund. We were in bad financial shape at the point we got divorced. I'm not proud to say it was basically paycheck to paycheck. So it probably wasn't good to let the credit card debt grow, but I wanted to be sure I had a safety net so I'm never at that point again.

Now I'm at a point where I could survive something like a layoff and putting everything together knowing what I know about my company's severance packages, what I could get from unemployment, what I'd have saved, and some assets I could sell if it got dire, could probably go 2 years able to support myself and my family. Maybe even longer now that the debt is cleared.

Was it the BEST plan? Maybe not. I don't particularly want to calculate what I paid in interest over that span. But unlike a lot of people, at least I got there.

paycheck to paycheck wasn't covering the credit card interest or other monthly bills

I didn't even have cable TV to watch my Huskers - not good

and 2 daughters to care for.....

Not sure if this belongs here or on it's own thread, given the subject matter. Also, I am not being paid to plug this, I'm just putting it out there.

The North Central chapter of the Institute of Transportation Engineers (NCITE) is having their monthly meeting next week down at Walter Library on the U of M campus.

Quote
The NCITE September Section meeting on 9/26 is in collaboration with UMN's ITSO and will include a presentation from the UMN Parking and Transportation Services office. They will be presenting on the traffic control plan used for large events at Huntington Bank Stadium, such as Gopher football games or large concerts. The plan has two phases: ingress leading vehicles to the parking facilities and egress helping all vehicles get off campus to one of the surrounding highways. The first phase needs to be flexible enough to change as parking facilities fill and the second phase needs to be efficient enough to handle all vehicles leaving at the same time. This presentation includes challenges due to Hennepin County's work closing lanes on 4th St this year and University Ave next year, as these are the main roads in and out of campus.
Registration closes on Tuesday 9/24/24. Meeting schedule is as follows:
11:30-12pm Registration and Networking
12:00pm Lunch
12:30-1:30pm Presentation
The Teams meeting link for virtual attendees will be sent the week of the meeting. Special thanks to our September Section meeting sponsor, SRF.

There are options for both member and non-member virtual and in-person attendance. Let me know if anyone here is interested, and I'll forward you the invitation email.
