Some good personal news. As most of you know, I got divorced in 2016. Which was good news, albeit expensive. Found the right lady and married her instead, also good news.

However, that's led to having a lot of financial upheaval. And that meant that for a little while, debt was creeping up, especially because in 2017-18, we both needed to buy cars. I was prioritizing building up the "rainy day fund" and making sure I was in a better situation for liquidity for emergencies, not attacking debt. When we got our cars paid off, I went into credit card attack mode, but right about that time was when our industry was struggling and bonuses dried up. So there were no "haymakers" I could throw and knock it out in a few punches unless I wanted to raid said rainy day fund. It was more chipping away--trying to chip away with decent sized chunks, but still chipping away. Well, after chipping away, I finally landed that haymaker.

So as of today, I am now debt free.

Sounds eerily similar to my life arc.  Took me 12 years to recover -- from a 6 year marriage. Oh the hell I went through....... Nightmare fuel.

Now that you've come out on the other side, you'll stand a little taller, the chest a little broader, and some swagger in your step.

Good for you!

The good news is that everything else that's gone right in the past 8 years now has me in a position that I'll have the means to ensure it never happens again--at least anything credit card related--and can prioritize further growing that nest egg rather than just being prepared for rainy days.

Of course the next big question will be what happens when the cars need to be replaced... Can I build myself into a position that I just write a check instead of taking out a loan? That's the goal. It'll be a few years until that needs to be a thing... I hope.
With cars my view is that it is VERY nice to be in a position where you CAN write a check for it, but that doesn't mean that you actually DO want to write a check for it.  A lot of times the dealerships are getting commissions on the loans and the automakers are offering incentives so taking a car loan makes a lot of sense.

Dealerships notoriously always want to negotiate on monthly payment.  It is a GREAT ploy for them because getting the optional gold plated whatchamacallit sounds ridiculous at $2,500 but it SOUNDS more reasonable for the low low price of just $14.99 per month.

Step 1: Select a not-nice car.
I'm somewhat in the middle. I don't value luxury cars much. But I also don't want a shitbox. And I do appreciate some creature comforts, so when I got my Ford Flex, I opted for the "Limited" (i.e. highest) trim package with more bells & whistles.

But obviously it's a Ford, and I always buy cars used, so I think it was a solid value. And like Badge, I like to keep them as long as I can get away with. No need to churn cars just because I've owned them a little while, right?

But then of course my wife drives a Lexus lol. But at least with that I can say the resale value will be high when we finally move on--which we're thinking roughly a 10 year ownership for that car.

yup, my last loan was in the fall of 2015 on a Chevy pickup

the incentive to take the loan was worth it.
Fine print said I had to keep the loan for 12 months.
I paid it off after the 12 months and saved a few hundred dollars overall

I don't like monthly payments.
They want you to screw up one month and pay late so they can hit you with all types of fees and penalties.
Haven't had a monthly payment since the fall of 2016

Autopay is your friend. And you normally get a better rate when you use it. 0.25% and sometimes better.

I hate autopay. I can manage it myself.

I just recently did the whole "credit freeze" thing after that big personal info leak, so now I get all sorts of emails from Experian.

I got a nice congratulatory email from them saying they looked back and I hadn't missed any payments in the last 6 months. Congrats on your streak!

Seriously?! I haven't missed any payment or even had one late with anyone in so many years I can't even remember having it happen. Not going to pat myself on the back because you only looked back 6 months, Experian!

I hate writing checks, wasting paper and wasting money on stamps.

That, and I have arthritis in my fingers. Writing anything sucks.

Yeah, I hate writing anything as well. I pay everything that I can online. I write one check per month.

It depends. I've always chosen to select a nice car, but I'm also a guy who keeps cars for a very long time.

I got 450K miles out of my 1995 Volvo 850 GLT.
I tend to go used and try to drive it into the ground.

I’m still very mad my last one had something go wrong on a road trip that junked the engine (I was mildly at fault). Only got 10 years and 105k miles out of it.

I don’t trust auto pay because I’ve had a couple of snafus with credit cards on that front. (Namely a card has to be canceled and something isn’t reset and I catch a $25 fee)

Yep, I haven't bought a new car since I don't know how long.

Bought the 95 Volvo in 97. Bought my current 2014 M-B in 2016. Sitting at 98K miles now. Started at 27K. That car could last me until I can't drive anymore, or until I croak.

But it's black, we live in Florida, and my wife wants an SUV. IT will be white or silver.
