Everything costs more.  It's been addressed numerous times on this thread.  The car battery for my F150 that was $99 in 2018 is $300 now.

Supply chain issues, global inflation, etc.

As a business owner I can tell you that prices have just went up and up and up. So much so that even now I’m having a hard time passing all the costs on to my customers.

The weird thing is that prices seem so uneven across the spectrum. So if it was just inflation I should see everything get about the same percentage increase. Instead, some things got 100% more expensive while others only saw modest 10-15% increases.

I wish I could remember what an 18 pack of whatever your favorite brand of domestic beer cost before 2020. It seems like it cost $18-22. I got to be honest, I didn’t pay much attention. Now it seems like it’s the same $18-22, depending on where you buy it. If it’s inflation, explain that one to me. Same thing with many common items. Some went way up, other not so much.

The US government and most foreign governments flooded the market with excessive fiscal stimulus. Between pandemic closures, supply chain issues, and general loose money policies, that meant that a LOT of excess money was chasing the same quantity or potentially even fewer goods and services. Prices went up, as would be predicted.

It's an example of what happens when the rubber of "good collective choices" meets the road of "reality", to borrow a little from another thread...

There was a lot of stored up "unspent" money in many bank accounts as we came out of COVID.  People had not been able to spend, but their income often was either the same, or aided by government.  The last stimulus bill was unneeded, the economy was recovering, but now people had even more cash on hand.  Couple that with lingering supply chain issues like ports not working normally and you have a lot of money chasing too few goods.

I recall starting to travel some in 2021-2022 and finding no or almost no rental cars anywhere.

Yeah. A few years ago (pre-Joe) we had to have the windshield replaced (cracked from a rock) in my wife's M-B SUV. It was $1,500 or so (covered by insurance) because it had all kinds of sensors built in for things like rain (wipers and headlights come on automatically), objects in front of you (car brakes if you don't), etc.

Yeah I've noticed beer and wine has basically held steady, which is weird. But makes it financially responsible to consume more calories with beer and wine.

The inflation was uneven, as noted above.  Some things got cheaper, I was ooggling new TVs at Costco thinking this $1299 model used to be $3,599.  Most consumers "see it" in gas prices (which have moderated) and food prices.  We see gas prices daily even if we don't fill up, and food we see weekly or more.  We usually have a rough idea how much we'd spend "before" and now it's "more", often exaggerated in our minds.

I buy cans of coffee at Costco that used to be $10, easy to remember, for a 3 lb can of "Columbian", and now it's $14.  I don't have as clear an idea what eggs cost before versus now, I know the price jumped and then settled back some.  Our qualitative assessment of inflation is usually not accurate because we notice big price jumps and tend to ignore things that didn't go up.
