DirecTV Disney ESPN: FCC complaint filed for anticompetitive practices (cnbc.com)

I got affected by this as the condo uses DirectV, so no ESPN for CFB season.  I went to a sports bar for a half yesterday.  Their seats are not very comfortable.  I had two Two Hearted Ales for $6 each and a philly sandwich which was mediocre.

We'll be gone next weekend anyway.
I’m surprised there are only 11 million DIRECTV subscribers.

they’re going to break at some point soon.

didn't they merge with Dish Network?

So, the only satellite service?

Forrester’s Digest: Boeing to boost satellite manufacturing plus Dish + DirecTV latest – SatNews

Both DISH and DirecTV have struggled in holding on to subscribers as viewers move away from conventional payTV and onto streaming platforms. The report come a day after investment bank UBS wrote a note outlining the benefits of a merger between Dish and DirecTV.

There is, this far, no formal comment from either business.

I have decent internet by fiber optic.  I'm pondering going full bore on line without dropping DirecTV (which I can't technically).  I need to look into Hulu et al.

Any reccos?

We do have a problem with "cloudy days" dropping the sat signal.

Hulu was fine. There were a lot of add-ons that brought me close to $100/month.

Yeah I think the YouTubeTV is more expensive up-front but it has locals plus pretty much ALL of the sports channels.  And all of the TNT/TBS/USA/FX stuff too.  So I haven't needed to add anything to it.

Sports and the Scripps stuff drove up the cost of Hulu.

B1G/FS1/FS2 and the CBS sports stuff are not standard on that platform.

My problem is that DirecTV for me is "free", or rather, I pay for it anyway, use it or not.  So, I'd be going up in cost.

Hopefully they sort things out with Disney by the time I get back.  The UGA-Bama game likely will be on ABC anyway.

I’m surprised there are only 11 million DIRECTV subscribers.

they’re going to break at some point soon.
The issue is that their subscriber base is quite "sticky", by which I should say "rural without adequate broadband / cable access". A lot of these folks just don't have other options.

Dish expanded beyond this years ago with SlingTV. They realized that in urban areas they were fighting an uphill battle. Many residential SFH owners didn't want a satellite dish hanging off their house, and many renters weren't allowed to have one. But in those areas broadband flourished, and they already had content deals in place, so they were the pioneer of streaming live TV. I think they're still trying to survive as the cost leader, but with a smaller channel package than Hulu/YouTube.

DirecTV has tried to do this, under the DirecTV Now name, then AT&T TV (when owned by AT&T), and now DirecTV Stream after being spun out of AT&T. I think they were too little and too late, and the constant churn of naming/ownership probably doesn't help them relative to Hulu, YouTube, and Sling.

But as long as they're the sole provider to rural areas without adequate broadband service, they've got a captive market. They already invested the CapEx to put satellites into space, so it's not like they have to run new cable or fiber to the backwoods to deliver TV.
