I'm amazed at how quickly you can toss away guns and COVID as reasons for an increase in homicide, then declare with certainty that it was due to leftist depolicing policies despite these policies not existing and there being no support that policing and homicides are any more related than other factors and homicides.
Then why, pray tell, did the leftist Mayor of Chicago feel compelled to temporarily suspend leftist crime policies so as not to embarrass the Democrats?

Cincy showed statistically that the correlation you wish for between guns and violence does not exist outside of your imagination.
In the UK they have less guns and a knife violence problem:

BLM and the defund the police movement were and are real things and you can't wish them away no matter how inconvenient they are for your argument.
This is hardly the first time that idiotic leftist crime policies have led to massive increases in crime. I personally visited NYC in the spring of 1994 just after the Big Apple had elected Rudy Guiliani Mayor in November of 1993.
The election of Rudy Guiliani in 1993, his reelection in 1997, and Bloomberg's elections in 2001, 2005, and 2009 need to be put in perspective. Here are NYC votes in the concurrent Presidential elections:
- 1992: D over R by ~44%
- 1996: D over R by ~60%
- 2000: D over R by ~60%
- 2004: D over R by ~51%
- 2008: D over R by ~59%
- 2012: D over R by ~63%
Despite NYC being overwhelmingly Democratic over this entire span they elected Republican Mayors in four consecutive elections followed by a tough on crime* independent who had previously been a Republican.
Why?
Based on my visits to NYC I can answer that. NYC was a shithole in 1994. Crime was rampant due to decades of leftist coddling of criminals. Here are the #'s
the #'s:
- Throughout the 1950's and for decades previously annual murders in NYC were in the 300's or below.
- leftist ideology began pushing those numbers up in the 1960's.
- Leftist criminal coddling and crime peaked in the early 1990', what a coincidence
The last for years before Guiliani took over annual murders in NYC were:
- 2,245 in 1990
- 2,154 in 1991
- 1,995 in 1992
- 1,946 in 1993
Then Guiliani and his tough-on-crime policies took over:
- 1,561 in 1994
- 1,177 in 1995
- Below 1,000 every year since.

Of course murders did spike in 2020 due to idiotic leftist ideas but they are still a mere fraction of their late-60's to early-90's levels.
Crime and idiotic leftist policies correlate. Crime and guns, crime and CO2, crime and the price of tea in China don't.
The left has blood on their hands.
