Sure, we could be headed to recession and a major market drop, I don't doubt that.  I just note this drop, so far, is worth a couple months of gains.  I had been doing a bit of selling because my "cash ratio" had dropped, and I was a bit nervous (I always am).  I was writing cover call options and getting paid decently for it though I did lose some of one stock I have.  Put options afford the better downside risk protection of course.

I spoke with my advisor. He said this is mostly being driven by fear and panic over the bad tech news. He also said that the Fed has held rates too high. We're not selling anything.

Truly massive hits here, I've never seen anything like it.  My longtime best friend from high school and college, Bald Greg who some of you met at the tailgate party, was let go effective Friday.  His entire division was cut.  He's been with the company for 26 years.

Looks like I'm okay this time, but there will likely be another wave in Q1.
Damn. Sorry to hear that it went deep, but glad to hear that you seem to be safe.

I know I've been in that situation watching a bunch of people getting cut and avoiding the axe. It doesn't feel good. Obv not as bad as getting it, but being a survivor is still a pretty shitty day.

Have some Live Oak tonight. Or maybe even some Tito's.

Because I'm into facts and not vibes. Sure, there was a movement for less policing, but that is not an actual policy. There was no widespread leftist policy adopted nationwide to have less policing. That did not happen. Some jurisdictions adopted some policies and most didn't change much of anything.

There was a monumental change in policing and everything else in 2020. That was due to COVID. Traffic patterns changes. Social patterns changes. Jobs changed. Schools changed. Everything changed, at least temporarily. This changing policing, like it changed everything else. There is no earthly reason to discount that.

Traffic suddenly dropped. There was no reason to have speed traps, because very few people were driving. Walking the normal beats made no sense because people weren't in their normal spots. Police had to adopt. Technology always moves as well. You mentioned earlier how we needed police interactions because they might lead to discovery of other crimes. But many jurisdictions now have Flock cameras, which basically detect stolen cars. That is much more efficient and safer than having cops pull over random people for lane violations.
LoL @ facts not vibes.

Fact:  The left pushed BLM and defund the police.
Fact:  The left showed police officers that they would NOT be supported - see earlier @Cincydawg comment about defacto strikes.
Fact:  Police interactions dropped.
Fact:  Police interactions did NOT return to normal post-pandemic.
Fact:  Homicides, while down this year as compared to last, are still WAY above pre-Floyd levels.

Fact:  Leftists have blood on their hands.

Get your vibes out of here, deal with the facts.

Amen brutha.

I've been laid off, and I've watched layoffs, but the worst was when I was a people manager at AMD, and had to perform the layoffs myself.  Just absolutely miserable.   That's one reason I have no desire ever to become a manager again.

A reason I went to work where I did was a soft promise of no layoffs.  And we never had any on a broad scale.  We had buyouts every few years, I took one when I was able.

A boss once told me it cost the company nearly 3x as much to keep me on staff versus a new hire doing the "same job".

Oh yeah, for sure.  Layoffs always tend to hit high level directors, managers, and longtime individual contributors much heavier than they hit new employees.  It's simple mathematics.

Best of luck to Greg.  Maybe a better job awaits?

We've been slow at my job, mostly due to some big projects going on in other parts of the world.  It sucked all the capital away from my particular group.  Not sure how any of this will affect me.  Going on 21 years in Oct.

Did the same thing.  I can't say I was nervous, but I tend to follow numbers and not a "feel" for what is happening.  I also know I need a certain return on my money (actually not very high) to be confident my money will last me, so I don't mind being higher in cash and cash equivalents.

I know layoffs aren't usually good for people, but my wife's layoff with the severance package was one of the reasons we decided to go ahead and retire.

Thanks.  He's practical, and both of us were already working the outside networks.  He'll be fine, heck I wouldn't be surprised to see him come back in 6 months and hire on at a higher salary that when he left.  I know 2 people that did that the last time we had major layoffs in 2015ish timeframe.

Best wishes for your future situation as well!

I seem to recall at the time you were saying you literally looked for things to do (like a conscientious individual should). When you left thought you stated they hired two more employees

They didn't hire two more, they replaced me with two current folks, promoting them into my former level.  At the time, I covered two disparate units, so my boss saw a reason to put two folks in for me to build his organization size.  I had almost no real work to do, other than the weekly TPS Report, with cover sheet.

And I had folks in India doing 95% of that.

It was an ideal sinecure for a burned out dude.  I spent most of my days posting here.
