Across Midtown, new ordinance aims to boost street-level vibrancy | Urbanize Atlanta

Mainly, mandating restaurants have outdoor dining sidewalk tables, which works for me.  There is a move afoot to "reimagine" Peachtree Street, which probably means losing a lane for more sidewalk etc., and probably a bike lane.  Moves in the right direction, I hope.  Most places now offer al fresco dining as an option, so maybe this doesn't change much.

Some places really don't have enough sidewalk room for tables outside.

Mandating? Don’t like the sound of that.

In a city, one faces a LOT of mandates.  This one is relatively benign.

It also mandates "compatible" facings for parking garages.  I'm fine with that too, the older ones are eyesores.

I ws trying to think of a newer restaurant without outdoor dining.  One of our favorite Indian places lacks it, the other has it, but the lacker doesn't have a wide enough sidewalk anyway.  This is the main problem on some side streets.  We usually go to the one that has outdoor seating even though I have a slight preference for the food at the other one.  I'm not sure how places on side streets will adhere to this, maybe there is an out.  Our favorite Korean fried chicken place just doesn't have space, again, on a side street.  The newer buildings usually are set back from the street some so the sidewalks are 15-30 feet wide.

Being on a side street is "near death" for a restaurant around here.  There is one that turned into a kind of "restaurant row" where they do well.

It's all moderately entertaining.

I'm with you.

If I had a restaurant and didn't want outdoor seating, I'd be unhappy with a mandate like this.

I don't mind sitting outside on the waterfront and such. That's a good vibe.

Sitting on a sidewalk next to a busy street with traffic, people looking at me eat, horns blasting, exhaust fumes, sewer fumes, and pigeons begging? The chance of a vehicle running off the road?

No thanks.

We prefer dining outside when possible.  And as I said, nearly every place already has an outside dining area except a few on narrow side streets (which are exempted).  That's the only reason I think a mandate is not really needed.  And of course, if a restauranteur doesn't want that he can go outside the district, which is a mile or so wide.

The "Midtown Improvement District" is pretty small overall.

As a remedy for ghostly sidewalks, the ordinance will require new restaurants to provide outdoor dining options along most streets in Midtown. And those patio spaces will now be allowed to encroach up to two feet into the sidewalks—and up to three feet on main drag Peachtree Street.

There are a few places around here where you can smoke outdoors. Not many allow it, but it's not against the law.

There doesn't seem to be much smoking anywhere around here.  I see some vapes on occasion, and smell MJ on occasion, strolling about.  The weather yesterday was pretty nice, it was hot, 90°F maybe,  but there was a breeze and low RH.  I went for a run and was fine, then went to the pool, which I had to myself.

We'll head out soonish to the local farmer's market and then to brunch somewhere, outside.  There is a place called Apres Diem we like, and the Indian place (Tabla) my wife adores, and the noodle place we both like and doesn't get much business (Silver Lake).  There are a couple South American places we like also, and an eastern Med place than is excellent, and ... a bunch more.

I see smoking lounges at the airport that are pretty crowded, I gather they have some pretty good ventilation inside.  That would be a rough addiction to have these days just due to the social/societal/regulatory limitations.]

There is a brand new cigar bar near us, it it very fancy inside, we checked it out before it opened.  They have a side that is for dining, but nothing outside.  It seems to cater mostly to African Americans, which seems a bit odd to me, but the Sugar Factory restaurant across the street is the same, the diners are mostly AAs.

We're thinking of hopping in the Jeep and heading here for lunch today: https://www.heritagecraftbbq.com/

Supposed to be toasty with a high of 92, but by heading to San Juan Capistrano we'll be moderately closer to the water so that should be a little cooler.

Online photos certainly look the part, I'd give it a shot.

92 is wonderful outdoor patio weather, enjoy!
