F15s are still in service after over 40 years.

Right, so why are we moving on from the F22s so quickly?  (or just seemingly so)

The F22 was hyperexpensive, and was designed for air superiority only.  The belief was that the F-35 could serve for all three services and have significant air to ground capability in addition to air-to-air.  The F-35 has a single engine which means maintenance should be lower cost.

The F-35 is a much more flexible concept, in theory.  The F-35B is VSTOL meaning the small "carriers" can now carry significant stike assets.

It's not terribly unusual to use a type of plane for decades, or only a few years, and we still have F-22s in service of course.

The interesting development is the F-15EX, an enhanced version of that plane, first developed for Qatar of all places, basically.  The F-15 was originally designed for air superiority, but they added a second cockpit and it can do significant air to ground now in the F-15 Strike Eagle version.

The B-2 may have a short run with only 20 built (21?).  The B-52 will still be flying almost a century later, it's now being reengined.  That is insane, but makes sense.

Thanks for that.
.
On a food note, I'm watching one of those silly BBQ challenge shows and one guy made a burger where one patty is beef and the other is sausage.

I'm dumbfounded that this isn't a major, common thing.  Has anyone had something like that?  One beef patty + one italian sausage patty, with a lil spice.
I'll mix the two if I'm feeling fancy making spaghetti (and if I think of it ahead of time at the store), but that's it.

I'm dying to make one now, I can't imagine I won't like it.

@OrangeAfroMan when we had our boat on Lake Michigan, we used to go to this place quite often, and I'd get this most of the times.

Tropics (thetropicsonline.com)

When we were actually docked in that marina as our home port, we'd be there every Friday and Saturday, but that was before they got a chef.

I don't want to know how much we spent at that place in the 6 years we were there...

what Cincy said earlier but also....they are going to be pivoting away from manned fighter aircraft. skynet is going to kill us all.

"Vista flew its first AI-controlled dogfight in September 2023, and there have only been about two dozen similar flights since. But the programs are learning so quickly from each engagement that some AI versions getting tested on Vista are already beating human pilots in air-to-air combat."

just saw this and it really caught my eye.....like holy chit.

The two largest, most valuable hotels in San Fransisco have plummeted in value by more than ONE BILLION dollars (combined) in just 8 years. The 1,024-room Parc55 hotel and the 1,921-room Hilton San Francisco Union Square hotel are now worth a combined $553.8 million, down 65% of their appraised value of $1.56 billion in 2016. Tourists/business conventions aren't visiting San Fransisco anymore I guess.

Great job Gavin Newsom!

In response to Ottawa's seeming lack of urgency, a bipartisan group of 23 US Senators sent a letter to Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau in May saying they were "concerned and profoundly disappointed that Canada's most recent projection indicated that it will not reach its 2 percent commitment this decade."

Harsh language, yay.  There is no proviso in the NATO Treaty to kick a country out.  Their membership is in no way "on any line".

The founding instruments of many international organizations provide for the suspension of a member State’s rights, and even for the termination of its membership, in certain circumstances. Instruments of this kind include the United Nations Charter (Articles 5 and 6), the Statute of the Council of Europe (Article 8) and the Treaty on European Union (Article 7). Alas, the North Atlantic Treaty is not among them. No provision in the treaty foresees the suspension of membership rights, let alone the expulsion of an ally.

I guess the only way out is conference realignment.
