Desire:  Hamas/Hezbollah/Iran:  we want every Jew dead

Rebuttal:  Israel: we don't want that

Desire:  Israel:  We want a safe place to live

.

Kind of a big difference there, no?
And if you disagree, tell me how many innocent Palenstinians would be dead if Oct 7 didn't happen.
Hint:  It's a single-digit number and very round.

That's a simple summary, but it's much more complicated.

Go back in time, before WWI, and look at what maps show for borders in that area.

I think it's dangerous to form a country solely based on religion.

The simple equivalent today would be the Vatican telling South Carolina that it no longer exists as it does today and will now be known as Catholicville. That is essentially what the British did to Palestine (with French help too).

Israel is now a state recognized by the UN. Palestine is not, and that infuriates the radicals within, and their allies.

Another thing I find interesting is how people identify themselves.

So, if you ask me what heritage is, I'd tell you I'm 100 percent German, raised in a Sicilian home (adopted).

I often find that when you ask a Jew what their heritage is, the answer is "I'm Jewish".

"Oh, your ancestors are from Israel?"

"No, Poland."

"Oh, so you're Polish?"

"No. I'm Jewish."

"Got it. OK, I'm a German Catholic and you're a Polish Jew."

"No, I'm Jewish."

"I need a drink."

It's confusing to me why this is the case.

As I pointed out, the only place I can think of that had anywhere near this level of violence with a matching level of distrust of all other parties is Northern Ireland.

Probably true. Vietnam and Korea have to be in there somewhere too. Some of the Eastern European squabbles.

But yeah, this current situation probably tops them all.

It's that "Jewish" is an ethnicity(/race?) beyond just a religion. Centuries of largely marrying within the culture (and ostracism from Catholic/Protestants reinforcing separate culture) has caused that. To the extent that there are actual genetic markers for the three main Jewish "tribes": Ashkenazi, Sephardi, Mizrahi.

I believe Ashkenazi was the primary group from Eastern Europe. If I look at my 23andme, shows my ancestral heritage is basically Germany/Poland/Ukraine/Austria. But on top of that, my maternal grandmother was Jewish, and so my 23andme identifies me as about 20-22% Ashkenazi Jewish, which makes perfect sense as she's ~1/4 of my genetics.

It's another reason why there are a lot of atheists who identify as Jewish. Which wouldn't make sense if they restricted the identity of "Jewish" to be purely religious. But if you think of "Jewish" as being an ethnicity/race that is tightly correlated to a religion, you CAN have one without the other.

Why is Jewish ethnic and Catholic is not? That's what I don't get.

If someone random were to ask me what I am, I wouldn't say "I'm Catholic".

Short answer is it was a more closed off community. Jews in Europe and everywhere else were often separated to a degree.

There’s also a more recent factor. Half my family is Austrian/Hungarian. Go back a few generations, a lot of Austrians and Hungarians were very into a massive pruning of my family tree. Thus, I don’t identify with them all that much. (I had relatives who basically tried to be more Austrian than Jewish. It did not save them)

There has also been a lot more intra-Catholic conflict and because it’s so big, a lot of nationalities under it.

Well, they did issue an arrest warrant for Putin.
Netenyahu is also Russian. Must be something in the blood of the Russians that make them psychopaths.

Evil Hitler Putin's war has killed a little over 500 children in over 2 years. Netanyahu? Well he's only slaughtered about 15,000 children in a little over 6 months. Killed countless aid workers and journalists as well and they've been discovering mass graves in hospitals all over Gaza with people in hospital garb with their hands tied behind their hands.

Are you posting from a college campus with all the other morons?

they murdered people, raped women, burned babies, and beheaded children.  And most importantly vowed to do it every chance they get.

Is it a surprise the the response is scorched earth?
the only morons are people who actually believe that propaganda. the bs sensationalist false journalism from the NYT about beheaded children, mass rapes, and burned babies has been thoroughly debunked 100 times over.

And no, it's not a surprise that a fascist war criminal like Benjamin Netanyahu has committed war crimes and slaughtered innocent civilian women and children by the tens of thousands en masse.

The US isn't even one of the 10 largest funders of the ICC.

So...zero?

Oddly the two largest contributors are Japan and Germany.  Italy is #5.
Israel does not recognize the ICC nor does Russia. So like with Putin, not much will happen.
