A fighter can fly pretty slowly before stall speed becomes a factor.  They can easily manage under 200 knots, even slower in special conditions.  A drone should be "jet powered" and making 400-500 knots.  The fighter would be vectored in by an AWACS and then use its own radar to take it out with guns or perhaps a Sidewinder.

Some pilots got to paint new targets on their aircraft.

Folks might think a supersonic fighter like an F-16 zooms around at 1,000 mph all the time, but it doesn't, and can't, for long.

Gracias.  I figured you'd be able to answer my question.

Saw some video footage from (allegedly) Israeli fighters taking out drones, they used guns but also a missile at one point.  But the missile might have been used against another missile, it was tough to tell from the video.

There were drones, which can be hardly different from cruise missiles, and then ballistic missiles.  The US drones are often used for reconnassaince but some have their own missiles or bombs that can be used.  These drones take off and return to base.  They are just unpiloted planes in effect.

The media started talking about "drones" in the Ukrainian conflict, and supposedly Iran was sending theirs to Russia for use.  The term, to me, is confusing.  If they are just one way guided bombs, I'd call them cruise missiles.  This is a "cruise missile".

This is stated to be Iranian drones, they look to me like cruise missiles, though perhaps they lack the ultra low terrain following of some cruise missiles.  These would use rocket motors to get up to speed and then a simple jet engine.

The main reason these are effective is they can fly at very very low altitude and are difficult to pick up from all the ground clutter.

Yeah I couldn't tell you.  The Shahed drones that Iran is sending to Russia look more like small airplanes and less like a traditional "missile" but the terminology could certainly be interchangeable in some cases, it seems.

This is one of the original ones to be seen but apparently they're making jet-powered ones now, too.

The Iranian drones that Russia has been using in Ukraine to date, are like the ones I posted, and not like these.  They're "kamikaze" drones or "suicide drones" that are more airplane-like.

That's not to say that the ones above haven't been used, or won't be used, but in Ukraine they now have plenty of broken/recovered Shaheds to look at, and determine what's being used against them.   Allegedly they're even reverse-engineering them and starting up manufacturing of their own.

115 mph is of course pretty slow and could be something of a problem for an F-16.  I can see calling anything with a propeller a drone.  Interestingly, maybe, the F-35 B model can hover in "flight" and is VSTOL capable.

drone - the new buzz word/term

obviously many different types

when I think of drones, I think of the little things with helicopter type blades that take pictures/video of golf courses and things

Lots of things in Iran to blow up from the Israeli perspective.  Facilities related to Iran's nuclear weapons program would probably be a priority.  Kind of hoping Israel hits Iran's petroleum production and refining facilities to give the Biden administration the middle finger more than anything else.

Their nuke facilities apparently are mostly hardened and underground, not readily damaged with explosives.

They could damage oil facilities of course, and even take out tankers.  Israel has four submarines apparently.

I was wondering for a second about the lack of a link...

...and in that second as I realized I am NOT a billionaire, I figured I'd just let it be. :57:
