I made an egg nog that was amazing for a 1/2 Christmas BBQ during COVID.  I was a hit, everyone asked for the recipe.  I later did the math, and it was obscenely unhealthy, while containing a very low amount of alcohol

My version is obscenely unhealty, while containing a high amount of alcohol.  If I had to guess, it's at least 2 oz. of booze per serving, which is pretty standard or even a little high for an average full-fledged cocktail.

Wel, I’m obviously uncultured. But nobody in our family ever made the stuff, and very few of the women are drinkers. And the women did 100% of the cooking and would throw a fit if it was suggested otherwise. I truly thought it was sorta a northern thing, like chowder and snow on Christmas.

Can't really comment on that.  Growing up in Austin in the 70s/80s, it was always ubiquitous on grocery store shelves and both of my older siblings loved it, so we always had plenty of it around the house. I couldn't stand it.

My i s c & a aggie wife's family are of German descent, not sure if that has anything to do with it.  Its origin is apparently English,  some kind of milk/fig punch called a posset, which eventually crossed the pond and eggnog became common during American colonial times.

I recall store bought egg nog sans EtOH as a kid,  I bought some a few years ago and it stayed in the fridge unopened until it went bad.  I think my Dad liked it.

There is no French equivalent apparently.
