We stay upper left along that golf course probably out of this photo.  This originally was just black lava fields from 1860 something.Most of those buildings are the Hilton Hotel.

That would be kind of a bummer to fly there midwinter as a warm weather getaway and be greeted by snow.

We often go in December.  It will be 82°F where we stay, the snow is above 12,000 feet.

The best part of my last Maui trip was sunrise at the top of Haleakala at 10,000 ft and then hiking the crater. It was May but sunrise at 10K was probably 33-35 degrees F.

All the best parts of my trips to Maui or Oahu have been when I've been as far away from Lahaina and Honolulu as you can get. Honolulu especially. It sucks. It's LA but humid.

I do want to hike some of Mauna Kea, see the lava tubes, etc... So at some point I probably will end up on the big island...

The Thurston lava tube is a bit ... boring.  The Chain of Craters road is pretty neat to me.  Seeing flowing lava is unbelievable, but I've only seen that once up close, once from a helo dropping into the ocean.  The top of Mauna Kea is the most unearthly place I've ever seen.
