I like travelling East much more than West - especially if we do a return crossing by ship.

They change the clocks every 2-3 days, so by the time we're home, there is no jet lag.

Mauna Kea, probably part of the Parker Ranch foreground, or what used to be it.

Hawaii bores me. Great, warm weather and beaches. I have no clue what those are like...

I like interesting places. Cities. Sights. Local cuisine aimed at locals, not tourists.

Hawaii is a resort. Resorts are boring.

I hear you on the resort thing, but Hawaii has more than warm weather and beaches.  It's very beautiful.  Far more beautiful than Southern California, no offense intended.

But, since I've already been there and seen the pretty stuff, I don't feel like I need to go back.  Lots of other places to explore.

So you don't want to go to Hawaii because you have warm weather and beaches at home.

But you like to go to other cities because... you don't have cities at home?

My wife and I obviously like the Big Island because it is so varied and changes frequently, and the weather is generally perfect.  The beaches there are not really great and you can scrape your legs on the lava pretty easily.  There is some snorkling which is decent.  It is not really like Magnum PI and how folks think Hawaii is.  And it has snow.

My bucket list of places to visit, someday:

Circumnavigate the Iberian peninsular, I hear Portugal has amazing food. get a haircut in Seville.

Vienna

Japan

Africa maybe, my wife wants to go back to Egypt

Argentina

I'd like to visit Volgograd but that might not happen.

We will get Tallin, St. Pete, Helsinki, Stockholm, and Copenhagen if the cruise comes off, then spending 4-5 days with a friend in Sweden on some island.

Massive pedestrian bridge, a future BeltLine link, set to open | Urbanize Atlanta

Pretty neat, will have to check this out, assuming I can find it.  I think it's not far from the Tower liquor store I frequent.

I wish that I had visited Europe as it existed up through the 90s, but I'm good on Europistan.

It's more the resort thing. Carefully curated experiences designed to be as bland as possible to cater to tourists.

The most fun I've had in Hawaii is when I'm far away from the cheesy hotels.

There aren't that many hotels on the Big.  Kona and Hilo have some, and there are resort areas north of Kona.  We stay in one, condos, nice really, the resorts don't have much by way of amenities.  There is a large Hilton hotel near where we stay that is impressive, but it doesn't have any beach at all, it's all black rocks.  They use either boats or a tram to take you to your room (which is pretty ordinary) and they have an artificial lagoon for swimming and whatnot.

We have stayed there a few nights but nomally have a condo.  They have the usual resort things there of course.  We live to drive quite some distance away to see stuff, like Volcano NP.  That's a pretty long day.  But I think most folks think of Honolulu or Kauai as Hawaii, and the Big Island is very different.
