Smarter than Trump.  How do you say "low bar" in Hebrew?

One way politicians make "tens of millions" is with book deals, and then of course speeches.  The former is a real "deal", they write some book hardly anyone buys, but get a large advance from some publisher who then they "owe" a favor.

Private companies then curry favor with said politician by buying up their books to hand out fo employees who end up throwing them out.  There are a lot of ways they can score, legally.

Selling influence.

Even SCOTUS Justices are in on this deal.

I'd also note IMHO Trump is also in on a different kind of grift with his "meme coin" thing.  Folks may claim "Well, he's already rich, so he's above all this.".  I don't think that is the case, at least not with his family (See Joe Biden).

money laundering
I don't view this as classical money laundering at all.  I presume most of these folks declare the income legally, as it's already legal income, there is no need to launder anything.

not classical but paying large sums of money for something that is worthless doesn't seem straight

it's just looks better than a bag of money for a favor or two - bribe

It's looks unethical, to me, but it's legal, and often practice in large part because it's legal.  There is zero need to launder any of this money.

And "they" pay a lot of money for influence, it's not "worthless" usually.

Folks claim Joe Biden made a lot of money, and he did, by ... writing a book.

I think I mentioned this before, my daughter was working for a huge real estate company in NYC, and they had a "mandatory" meeting where Hillary was to give a speech.  This was circa 2014.  No doubt Hillary was paid whatever for said speech, which I presume would be a stock speech where she changes a few specifics.

My daughter couldn't recall anything from the speech when I asked her, she paid little or no attention, which is fine.  The next morning they all had a copy of Hillary's latest book on their desks.  She told me most folks immediately dumped it in the trash (including her).  But Hillary booked a few thousand additional sales, probably at full cost.

I read that the basic function of the "Clinton Foundation" was to retain employees who would later be used to staff her campaign.  They got paid for being part of the CF, and thus didn't wonder off into the hinterlands, thus giving Hillary a group of campaign staffers she had already vetted.  So,  they were kept together.  And of course myriad companies expecting Hillary to be the next President made "generous" donations to the CF (which fell markedly when she lost).  It's a way to buy influence, entirely legal, corrupt in my mind, but legal.  I thought the CF was brilliant, tactically, though corrupt.  I presume they did fund some beneficial projects somewhere, maybe.  They were awash in money for a time.

Yup, there can be no other reason to pay large sums for one speech by anyone.  I can see paying expenses and maybe a $10,000 honoraium for some highly revered personnage, maybe.
