I basically am OK with tariffs of some sort with China.  Canada not nearly as much, maybe some spot tariffs to negotiate.

Movies?  No, I'm not seeing some rash of propaganistic foreign films coming in, the Hollywood movies are propagandistic enough often.

Yeah the superhero and big action movies play well around the world.

China is notoriously protectionist of its movie industry, even before the new Trump tariffs they only allowed 34 import films per year.  So I'm not particularly sad if a movie tariff is applied against them, although I can't imagine we import very many Chinese films annually anyway.

As far as the rest of the world goes, are they really stealing production from the USA?  I know Canada has a strong movie industry, but in general I think films shot in Europe and Asia, are done so because that's where they are set.

I do know that Disney has shot most of the Star Wars films in England ever since they acquired Lucasfilm, and I believe they shot a bunch of the Marvel stuff over there too.

So maybe it's a shot against Canada and Disney?
I thought Star Wars was pretty much always shot in England, even the Episode 4 (New Hope).  I'm not sure the reasons why.

I was idly thinking it was shot in New Zealand, but I think that was the other movie series.

Original Star Wars was shot in Tunisia (Tatooine scenes), Guatemala (rebel base on Yavin 4), and the USA.

I read that the Moon landings were faked but for realism were shot on location.

I’d guess the tactics aren’t really all that thought out.

I know Canada and think Ireland do some subsidizing, not too different from what Georgia did a while back. (in some cases, it’s been cheaper to fly everyone out to Ireland than to shoot in Los Angeles)

It’s really conflating two different things, production and the actual sales/profits from movies. In theory, maybe there’s value in reshoring production. That said, the 34 movies China shows make the US some money. Last year, Chinese tickets were about $728 million (and that number is down from historical highs). US box office was about $8.57 billion.

That part just feels misguided is we’re trying to get a better trade balance. Why court issues where we’re a net exporter?

Yeah I prefer to see positive incentives on domestic production rather than negative regulation against foreign production.  Except when it comes to China who has been waging an economic war against the USA for many many decades.

I believe one issue is relying on government to make these decisions.  Often some special party or other gets special treatment because they are connected.  And "government" is sort of notorious for making poor decisions often as not.  Tariffs as a kind of anathema to free market advocates, and I tend in that direction.

Obviously, China is not the only violator.  Canada tariffs on some goods from the USA are reported to be severe.

Trump exaggerates EVERYTHING
I'm assuming Canada has some tariffs on American goods - maybe even dairy from Wisconsin

Their dairy tariffs only kick in when imports exceed a level they never exceed.
