We moved to ATL in 1964 and my parents wanted a basement, houses with one were hard to find then.  We ended with one with a half basement which worked fine for us.

I drove by there a few weeks back, the hood still looks decent, trees are a lot bigger.  Hard for me to believe that house is 60 years old, 4 bdr, had no central air at the time bought for $26 K.  It had woods behind it which were nice for me, now that's some commercial building and parking lot.

Up in the Bay Area it's even more weird. I'm not sure the Bay Area is a bubble. There is just SO much damn money there with Silicon Valley that I think the insanity might actually be sustainable. IMHO SoCal doesn't have anything remotely like that, so the fact that real estate values have gotten so divorced from affordability means IMHO it has to go pop sometime... But up there in the Bay, prices are insane but so are the incomes.
I remember the first time a house in my block sold for more than $1 million. My response was “that place. The kinda junky one on the busy street.”

That was more than 15 years ago. Today it’s valued at $1.85. Only one house in the block is under a million (at just below $700 per square foot)

I never saw any conclusive answer about those drone sitings in NJ etc.  I think most were aircraft.

White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt just said in her first briefing from the White House press room that the reported drone sightings that sparked panic in New Jersey last month were drones authorized to fly by the Federal Aviation Administration and “not the enemy.”
Leavitt made the announcement — the most significant since drone paranoia took off in December — after Trump said on December 16 “something strange is going on and for some reason they don’t want to tell the people.”
“After research and study, the drones that were flying over New Jersey in large numbers were authorized to be flown by the FAA for research and various other reasons,” Leavitt said, saying she was reciting a statement from the president.
In response to the public concern, the FAA put in place dozens of drone bans over critical infrastructure, which have since expired. The new explanation is in line with what Biden administration officials said at the time — that the drone sightings were not nefarious.
“Many of these drones were also hobbyists, recreational and private individuals that enjoy flying drones,” Leavitt said. “In time, it got worse due to curiosity. This was not the enemy.”

Was there a sighting of Uranus?

No basements in the regions needing them most --- Tornado Alley.
I get too many tornados here  - one is too many

I have a basement - poured concrete with a walkout to the back yard
1,100 feet on the main floor, 1,100 feet of basement
I've got a bedroom with large walkin closet, full bathroom, and furnace/storage room down there.
I could easily add another bedroom or 2.

The research drones learned that we're quick to scare and turn chimp at the sight of one of them, cursing and throwing a shoe at it.

For sure.

In the Midwest, kids need a place to play in the winter.

Fun fact: Basements in Chicago were originally intended for stormwater storage.
By 'stormwater storage' do you mean 'bootlegged liquor'?

For some reason I can’t post links or photos.

Tornado Alley has shifted to the Southeast.

Earlier OAM you asked if were were OK with people living under a bridge.  I'm not going to say that I'm OK with it, but you have to at least acknowledge that a lot of people that are homeless ultimately choose this life on their own free will.  Because they either have substance problems, or simply don't want to work.

In America it's your right to live the way you desire, if you strive to be rich, or don't want to work, it's your path to pursue.  That's why it's called "pursuit of happiness", not simply "happiness".  Not everybody who is a bum is mad about it.
I guess I'm focused on the 90% that have substance issues and want to have a normal life, but can't at their current state.
Hard to get a job when you're wearing rags and having bathed in 2 weeks.

I was talking about this with a coworker and we wondered how much more difficult it is for panhandlers as we stray further and further from cash being a thing.  10-15-20 years ago, everyone had cash on them and now I rarely do, if ever.  Giving a couple bucks was easy and felt good, but.....that's gone away.

Tornado Alley has shifted to the Southeast.
There's always been a tiny sliver of land around the I-4 corridor in FL that had as many tornadoes as KS-OK or even more.  But I get what you mean.
