I think it's possible that it could get to a county level. I just don't think the state legislatures would let it happen. There would have to be a referendum.

In Illinois, which is controlled by Chicago, most of the counties outside of that area would be more restrictive, or not allow it at all.

Oh, and the other thing that pisses me off about this is the crowd saying "it should be in the states' hands" clam up and shrug when I suggest drilling it down to the county level.

They're full of shit and spewing nonsense if they advocate for a localized law on abortion.  Put Texas and local in the same sentence.  Put California or Montana or Florida and the word local in the same sentence.

If someone seeking an abortion would have to drive to the nearest large-ish urban area instead of the nearest other state, and you pretend that's an ethical issue, you're a massive ass hat.  And fake.  And shitty.

Do it county-to-county so no one has to drive 10 hours for a reluctant, serious medical decision.

I'm not staunch on the topic, other than 3rd trimester abortions.  You either want the baby, or don't -- seems to me that could be figured out within the first 60 days.

However, I do have a bone of contention for the "make it easier" crowd.  Oh the horror, I may have to drive 2-3 hours to have a potential life-altering procedure performed.  Good Lord.  It's harder, and much farther way, for 99.9% of Americans to take their kids to Disney World.  Cry me a river.

Do what you will, but don't complain that it's not made super convenient for you.

I'm a first trimester person. Plenty of time to figure it out.

Another thing...

If you have unprotected sex with someone and the juice hits home, go get a pregnancy test. I'm sure some agency gives them away, like everything else.

I'm fine with it being hard to find abortion clinics if there isn't enough of a market to support it. Just like there are only two Disney parks in the US, in Orlando and Anaheim. You live in Tulsa? Tough.

But I don't like the idea of government making Disney theme parks illegal so that people HAVE to go far away to get to it. Which is what we're discussing here. Governments actually making something illegal so even if there IS enough market demand to support a clinic, one can't open.

Is it?  I don't agree that's what we're discussing here.

Governments aren't making it illegal for market reasons.  The market for abortions has nothing to do with it.  The travel time or distance has nothing to do with it.

No-- governments are making it illegal because the representatives in that government, and presumably the constituents that voted for them, have an ethical or moral issue with the idea of abortions.

Like marijuana legalization?  Oh the horror.

Of course. If 50%+1 have an ethical or moral issue with it, the other 49% aren't allowed to have the market serve their needs.

Similar, although there MIGHT at least be a rationale for making some drugs illegal. I don't think that argument holds up for pot very well, but drunk or high people behind the wheel can cause major problems for other people.

A woman getting an abortion doesn't injure you in any way.

Yes.  That's the system.  Welcome to 1776, or 1789 for those who'd like to be pedantic about the Constitution itself.

I haven't seen a better method out there yet, so I'm okay with this one.

A dude getting murdered on the streets in Chicago, IL doesn't injure me in any way either, yet lots of folks think it's morally abhorrent.

Neither does animal abuse, but I'm glad it isn't legal.

Along with a myriad of other illegal activities that don't actually injure me.

Which is ultimately why I don't think the pro-life contingent will EVER be satisfied with this being handled at the state/county/city level.

To those people, deciding it state by state or county by county would be as absurd as a Texan thinking it just fine if Chicago legalized murder.

But I can't imagine you being supportive of the idea that in Knoxville it being illegal to abuse an animal, but if someone wants to drive 2 hours to Asheville if NC didn't criminalize animal abuse that's totally cool for you.

Perhaps not, but the federal ruling has already been overturned.  I suppose they could try to get a new federal ruling on it, that is 100% pro-life?  Good luck with that.

This is now, and WILL be, a state issue, which is much better than it being a federal issue.

Nope, it's not cool for me either way.  There's lots I'm not cool with that I can't do anything about.  I don't have to support it for it to be so.  Such is life.

If someone in Knoxville really wants to put a beat down on their dog, and it is legal in Asheville, well....I just don't feel sorry for them that they have to drive 2 hours to do their business.
