The fact of the matter is neither party has much of anything to sell at the moment.
Hence my last line. They have plenty to sell, but they rarely deliver.

Something else that has been bothering me about the shooting.....why did they tone down the headlines?  I saw headlines at first that severely understated the situation....Trump fell, loud noises heard, possible fireworks, etc.  This is from CNN and MSNBC and other major news outlets.  Anybody with half a brain knew within 1 minute that the former president had been shot at, and possibly shot.  Watching the footage you hear the pop pop, then him wince and grab his ear, and then all the commotion that followed.  I don't know how long the headlines were up, maybe only a few minutes, but it seems very weird to me that they would do that.

I hate to do the whole conspiracy theory thing, but why try to downplay things unless you're very intentionally downplaying something that may end up being a major advantage to a presidential candidate?  From my view point they did the opposite for Biden.  Clearly his facilities have been deteriorating for years, and that has been vastly underreported.
There is some difficulty in relaying news that quickly. You don't want to report Trump had been shot without some sort of confirmation of it. Feels like the kind of things no one would care about 20 years ago, but now when we have the news seconds after it happens you get stuff like that.

I find it weirder that this shooter was a gun nut that had Trump signs in his yard.

I like this idea.  Makes sense.  Warren Buffet has postulated that if we exceed "X" amount of GDP then the congressmen and senators that are up for election cannot run for re-election.
I think that goes too far because there are times when substantial deficits are necessary and appropriate. Per the Fed, the largest deficits as a % of GDP have been:
  • 1943, 26.9%
  • 1944, 21.2%
  • 1945, 20.9%
  • 2020, 14.7%
  • 1942, 12.3%
  • 2021, 11.8%
  • 2009, 9.8%
  • 2010, 8.6%
  • 2011, 8.3%
  • 2012, 6.6%
  • 2023, 6.2%
  • 1983, 5.7%
  • 1934, 5.4%
  • 2022, 5.3%
  • 1936, 5.0%

Those are all the years since the 1920's with annual deficits > 5% of GDP.

Four of the worst five were WWII years and the other one was COVID. Occasional large deficits like those or 1934, 1936, and 1983 are sustainable as long as we return to fiscal sanity once the event causing those deficits abates. What we cannot sustain are >5% deficits every year as we have had since 2020 and from 2009-2012.

In the 16 years from 2009-2024 we have run deficits of >5% nine times (2009-2012 and 2020-2024).

But if you looked at Ohio, Pennsylvania, Michigan, Wisconsin, and Minnesota you'd see the opposite.
Yeah, and I'd want to look into that. Illinois is probably an outlier because the Chicago metro is SO huge relative to anything in the Midwest that it might slightly defy regional trends. Denver and Phoenix are rapidly growing. Not 100% sure on the growth rate in Atlanta but it's the regional "attractor" for jobs IMHO.

I think those other states you mention are all sorta the opposite. Isn't much of the "rust belt" hollowing out? Populations stagnant to declining? Potentially de-urbanizing as people in cities are leaving for better economic opportunities in the South / West, while the rural population, especially farming, remains right where they are?

When I think of Ohio, I think of a state where everyone who lives there loves it because there's no such thing as a "big city". There are a lot of medium-sized cities, all large enough to give people a wide range of experiences but none so large that they're anything like an NYC or LA or Chicago or Atlanta. You get all the advantages of cities without their worst excesses. But even then it's discussed upthread that Cinci and Cleveland are sort of hurting, while someplace with a major university / knowledge hub like Columbus is the one growing.

I get a similar sense with Wisconsin, where it's a more heavily rural state with Milwaukee which is a minor city. Detroit used to be a major city, but it's dead. Pittsburgh seems to be declining, but I'm sure Philly is still more healthy being close to the power centers of the East. I can't really tell re: MSP, it seems like a city that punches above its weight class but I'm not sure how much it dominates the state overall like Chicago or Atlanta or Phoenix or Denver does.

I dunno... You guys are the ones that live there. If you can offer more color, let me know.

there are a lot of weird things in regards to the shooting and attempted assassination. not much of any of it makes sense right now.

whataboutism isn't a real word. it's just some stupid term invented/popularized by some dipshit from the UK on his blog on the internet that other dipshits now use. congrats on being a dipshit?
It's actually a logical fallacy.

I often seem at odds with people, both here and in my day-to-day life, who commit logical fallacies almost constantly, without seeing the problem with doing so.

It's interesting.

I am going to opine on something here, and I’m sure it will appear to be biased, but honestly don’t mean it to be that way.

I agree that both parties fail, miserably, usually, and delivering what they “promise”.

Politics in this country seem to have a natural pendulum which swings the other way when it gets too far one way

I would suggest it is far left now, and will swing back to the right a bit.

People are kind of filled with what they perceive the current administration has brought them. ( I say perceived because I don’t think it’s fair to tag the current administration with all of this.)

-You have pretty much an open border and people coming in Un vetted from approximately 180 different countries, including Russia, China, Iran, and all of the south American countries.  Some of them are being caught, committing, violent crimes, and several of them have been caught as repeat offenders

-You have an environment that is clearly soft on crime, a defund, the police atmosphere, and victims being treated worse than criminals, especially in the big cities

-Inflation and gas prices
- war on multiple fronts
-Men dominating women’s sports on numerous fronts.
-DEI run amok.  Meritocracy under assault
-Squatters having more rights than homeowners.
-Parents having less then school boards in a number of locations and drag queens coming to visit third graders
-Patriotism, displaying the American flag, being looked down on and ridiculed
-fentanyl coming across the border illegally and Kellie 100,000 people or more every year
-A complete lack of transparency by the media and government. Gaslighting galore, which always eventually gets exposed as false.

If this election moves toward the right, and I’m not 100% sure that it will, those are many of the reasons why.

For the record, my position on abortion and guns is definitely left of center as well as my position on LGBTQ.  I am probably right off center just about everything else.  Full disclosure.
Get your facts first, then you can distort them as you please.

my two cents: parents 100000% have the inalienable right to know what’s going on with their kid- not be kept in the dark by a nanny state that knows better for the child than the child's you know, actual parents.

gender identity issues have no place in schools. especially not at the expense of parental rights. that is insane.

I mean, wouldn't a nanny state be the one surveilling and reporting on kids?

I tend to be a deregulation type. If a teacher wants to inform a parent, that's their business. And if they decide to hold a kid's confidence, also their business. And if a parent is red assed because their kid doesn't trust, well that's a them problem.

Minimal state regulation, people figure out stuff for themselves.

There is a difference between a teacher on their own deciding not to tell the parents and a school requiring teachers not to tell the parents

Maybe try something different, to decrease their suicide rate?  Maybe?
