What kind of clubs do y'all recommend for a beginner? I mean, I've got good hand-eye coordination (can still hit a 90 MPH fastball) so I think I'll pick it up quick, so I don't want to go cheap.
You sure you're talking about golf?

My advice for a beginner:
- Find a set of used clubs. Assuming you're of generally normal size and strength (and not yet a "senior"), basic irons with steel shafts of normal flex are fine. Really it doesn't matter much at this point.
- Take some lessons. If you're a beginner, it's better to learn things right to start rather than try to figure it out on your own and learn bad habits up front.
- Play with those used clubs for a full season to start to get a sense of the game and your swing.
- After a season, go get professionally fit for clubs that fit your swing, and sell the used ones.
I'm a fan of professional fitting. Most of what they're working with is the part of the club that most people pay zero attention to... The shaft. But the shaft is the most important part. Beyond that the fitter will let you try out multiple clubheads and you'll go with whatever brand feels right to you.
But think about it... If I were a beginner at baseball, and asked you what bat was best for me, you'd say "learn to swing first, son, before you start figuring out exactly what bat is perfect for you".
That said, if you want to buy new clubs off the rack, you definitely want something in the "game improvement" category because they're most forgiving. I've heard good things about the Ping G710 series, and the Taylor Made SIM Max or P790 series, and the Callaway Mavrik irons.
But I still say start used, learn to swing, then get fit for a real set after a season of learning.
